In addition, US market is at all time highest level and has ended propellent for further growth.

Furthermore, the Global light vehicles market ended the year with a new all time record, the seventh in a row with 94.5 million vehicles sold, up 2.2% from the previous year

In fourth place Nissan has overtaken Honda, after a long fight number by number, with 5.13 million sales (+4.6%) while Honda did 5.07 million (+7.0%).

Koreans are struggling, first time in a decade, with Hyundai sixth with 4.46 million sales (-8.0%) and Kia 8th with 2.7 million sales (-9.3%). Both brands are losing near the half of sales in China.

Chevrolet was seventh with 4.1 million sales (+0.2%) while in 9th place Renault is fast growing with 2.6 million (+9.3%) as the 10th, Mercedes, with 2.56 (+10.1%).

Italian Auto Market up 7.1% in the 2017, despite losing 2% in the last month, hitting the best level since the 2008. Citroen was the fastest growing brand, thanks to the new C3, stable on podium in the second half, while Hybrids push up Toyota.

Italian economy gained traction in Q3, growing at the fastest annual rate in more than five years. Although a complete breakdown is not yet available, the strong expansions recorded in the industrial sector throughout the quarter suggest that robust fixed investment drove the acceleration. On 27 October, S&P Global Ratings revised Italy’s credit rating up from BBB- to BBB, citing declining risks in the banking sector, stronger investment and steady employment growth. According to leading indicators, momentum seems to have carried over into Q4: Both business and consumer confidence improved in October, and the manufacturing PMI hit a multi-year high on the back of expansions in both output and new orders—especially from abroad.

Italian vehicles market fell down in the period 2008-2011 hitting a thirty years record low, before starting to recover. In the last 5 years car passenger’s volume grew up from 1.4 million in the 2012 to 1.8 million in the 2016 and finally at 1.964.000 in the 2017, with a total light vehicles figures hitting the 2.14 million. Outlook for 2018 is still positive and the market is foreseen above the 2 million units again, after a decade.

Swiss Cars Sales 2016 moderately down standing over 0.3 million for the 6th year in a row. The podium was entirely won by German Brands with Volkswagen almost doubling BMW and Mercedes.

Market Outlook

There are encouraging signs from the consumer side of the economy: retail sales increased in November and bucked a two-year downward trend. The FocusEconomics panel expects growth of 1.5%, which is unchanged from last month’s Consensus. In 2018, panelists project that GDP will expand 1.6%.

Albeit with slight sales losses, the Swiss cars market in 2016 was one of the rare in Europe to decline y.o.y. with 317.318 units (-2.0%). Despite the registrations posted the third negative performance since 2010, it was the sixth consecutive year with over 0.3 million units sold.

According to data released by the Auto Suisse, the Association of local Automotive Importers, in December the cars passengers has been 35.331 sales (+8.2%).

Competitive Arena

Despite the Dieselgate, the market leader in 2016 was of course Volkswagen with 42.142 units (-0.2%) ahead of BMW and Mercedes respectively up 2.8% and 4.2% at 24.780 and 23.842. The greatest increases were reported for Jaguar, Cadillac, Bentley, Honda, Dacia and Alfa Romeo, while the best performers was Infiniti, surging 172.7%.

Lancia and Dodge posted the worst performances losing 33.9% and 30.4%, followed by Nissan, Citroen, Smart, Peugeot, Audi and Jeep.

The Volkswagen Golf was on the first step of the podium for the 23rd consecutive year with 11.988 units (-21.6%) ahead of the Skoda Octavia with 11.721 (-4.1%) and the Volkswagen Polo with 6.516 (+30.7%).

In fourth place, the new Volkswagen Tiguan with 6.434 units (+62.9%) was the most popular SUV in Switzerland.

Italian light vehicles market in 2016 recovers a place within the Top 10 Global markets, growing again over 2 million units. The car passengers sales at 1.82 million, were up 16%.

Market Outlook

The latest monthly indicators suggest that the economy maintained a slow but broadly steady pace of growth in Q4 after it had accelerated slightly in Q3, mainly on the back of stronger fixed investment, which offset a more negative contribution from the external sector. In the political arena, on 4 December, Italians voted No in the constitutional referendum, prompting Matteo Renzi to resign as prime minister.

Supported by fiscal incentives to vehicles purchased for business, the domestic new car passenger’s sector reported a brilliant year with a robust gain over the already positive 2015. In December the sales improved 13.7% with 124.433 registrations scoring the 25th year on year growth in a string.

The full year was the best since 2010 with 1.826.881 sales (+16.0%). Adding the sales of light commercial vehicles of 185.000 units (preliminary data) the whole light vehicles market raised over 2 million units again, first time since 2010, a significant recovery from the low peak hit in 2013 at 1.4 million.

Thanks to this outstanding trend, the Italian light vehicles market gained 3 spots in the global ranking, outpacing Korea, Canada and Brazil recovering its traditional rule within the Top 10.

Competitive Arena

Almost all brands are participating to the sales festival. However the year was almost positive for Renault, Mercedes, BMW, Jeep, Mazda, Honda and Lexus while the crown of the best performer was by far taken by Jaguar, up 197% at 4.912 sales.

Less positive performance were reported for Toyota, Opel, Volvo, Seat with he worse ticket, the only one down, shown by Nissan, down 6.7%.

At model wise, Fiat Panda was the leader for the 5th year in a row with 147.283 sales (+16.5%) and the domestic performance pushed the model up the podium in the global “city-cars” ranking (see the dedicated article).

Second was the Lancia Ypsilon, surprisingly gaining one spot despite the age, with 65.663 units (+17.6%), while third was the Fiat 500L with 54.578 sales (+9.3%).

Best imported models and up 2 spots the Renault Clio with 49.798 units.

Switzerland Car Market 2015 was up for the third year in a row albeit shy Q4. Despite a disappointing economic scenario, the industry reported a +7%. Volkswagen was leader while Mercedes and Renault shine.

Economic Outlook

The Swiss economy has decelerated throughout 2015 and recent data showed that Q3’s GDP figures weren’t an exception. After avoiding falling into recession in the second quarter, the economy stagnated in the third quarter. While the disappointing figure was largely attributable to a contraction in fixed investment reflecting a weak performance of the construction sector, the country’s external sector remains fragile due to the overvalued currency and the slow recovery in the country’s main trading partners.

The economy will likely record another weak growth figure in the fourth quarter. In fact, retail sales contracted again in October and the KOF Economic Barometer plummeted to a seven-month low in November.

Market Outlook

The domestic industry sales has decelerated during the Q4 2015 with only a +3% increase over the correspondent period last year. However, the market closed the 2015 with the third increase in a row despite slow economy.

According to data released by the Auto Suisse, the Association of local Automotive Importers, in December car passenger’s sales had been 32.642 -0.7% while the entire 2015 sales had been 323.784, up 7.2%.

During the year, Volkswagen has sold 42.212 cars (+5.1%) with 13.0% of market share followed by BMW with 24.103 (+6.4%) and Mercedes, up 2 spots from 2014, with 22.884 (+24.5%).

Down the podium, Audi, down 1 spot, with 22.225 (+6.4%), Skoda, down 1 spot, with 20.972 (+7.5%), Renault with 14.821 (+26.2%), Opel with 13.769 )+2.9%) and Ford with 13.704 (+5.8%).

At Group wise, Volkswagen ended the 2015 with 31.5% of market share ahead of BMW with 9.0%, Renault-Nissan with 8.8% and Mercedes with 8.1%.

The best-selling model was the Volkswagen Golf with 15.288 sales (+6.4%) ahead of the Skoda Octavia with 12.228 units (+12.7%), the Volkswagen Polo with 7.210 (+22.5%), the Audi A3 with 5.725 (+10.0%) and the Seat Leon with 4.869 (+21.7%).

Volkswagen Group beats Toyota and takes the global automotive leadership in 2014, selling 9.9 million light passengers vehicles. It is the first time ever that a European Group is Global leader in the sector. See here Top 40 Car Groups Ranking.

In the 2014 according to preliminary data collected by focus2move Research Team in over 110 markets, the total new Light Passengers Vehicles global market grew 2.8% from the correspondent month last year, fixing the new all-time record volume at 86.5 million units, over 2.5 million better than in the 2013.

The 2014 marked a new milestone in the history of the automotive sector.

For the first time ever (or at least following the Second World War) a European Car Manufacturer is the biggest in the World.

For decades, the leadership was disputed between General Motors and Ford and their battle for selling more and more cars was a disaster for both, as the competitions moved over profitability.

Ford changed at the arrival of mulally while GM, the global leader until the 2008, was in bankruptcy and rescued by Obama’s team.

Since 2009 the leadership was taken by the Japanese Toyota that was the king for five years.

However, under the Toyota leadership the Volkswagen Group was scoring an impressive growth challenging Toyota closer and closer.

Finally in the 2014, the Volkswagen Group took the crown of the biggest group worldwide!

In the last three years Toyota Group has reduced its global share from 12.0% to 11.5% while VW grew from 11.4% to 11.6%.

In the 2014, Volkswagen sold 9.91 million vehicles and Toyota 9.81. Both announced to have sold more than 10 million vehicles, probably adding the Heavy track to these numbers (focus2move reports only about cars + LCVs).

The Volkswagen Group success was fueled by a strong Skoda and Audi performance, respectively up 10.2% and 9.3%, while the brand Volkswagen grew only 2.4% last year.

Last year record was the fifth in a row for a very healthy industry that found a break on its growing path only in the 2008 and 2009, mainly for the EU and USA shortfall.

However the year ended with a second half pace lower than predicted, mainly due to Chinese market thin growth.

Toyota, the first Brand in the World, posted its new all-time record sales at 8.3 million units, up 1.2%.

In second Volkswagen hit its record as well, with 6.5 million, but something else will be celebrated in Germany, considering that the Volkswagen Group in the 2014 has taken the leadership in the sector, first time ever for any European brand. More details in the report on 2014 Global Groups.

Following the impressive 2013 performance, when it was the fastest growing brand, Ford last year kept the third place with a thin increase of only 50.000 units (or 1.0%) at 5.8 million.

After a long battle against Hyundai and Nissan, Chevrolet was able to defend the fourth place albeit losing over 200.000 units or 4.6% from the previous year, the worse Y.o.Y. performance among the Top 30 Brands.

The group behind, Hyundai, Nissan, Honda and Kia overtook the market with over 4% growth. All of them have hit their record!

Renault in 9th place fell 1.5% and Fiat 2.7%, losing two spots in favor of Peugeot (+8.3%) and Mercedes (+9.3%)

Among the Top 50 Brands, the fastest was the last, the Chinese BAIC that almost doubled sales from the previous year. Second was Jeep (26th with 875.000 sales, +38.0%) and the third was the Chinese Haval (43rd with 380.000 sales, +35.9%).
