In December 2013, the Egyptian car market kept the declining trend ending the year losing volume from the previous year.  Indeed, accordingly with preliminary sales data released by A.M.I.D., the Egyptian Association of Car Manufacturers, the light vehicles sales in Egypt have been 20.850, down 4.0% from last year, the third YoY loss in a row. Full Year sales were 197.535, down 1.4% from 2012.

Following years of up and down, last year the market was surprisingly stable, despite a sharp fall reported in July, when internal social clashes touched the highest level.

Chevrolet sold over 43k with market share at 21.9%, despite second half was below 20%. Chevrolet leadership is based on its dominion in the LCV segment with the TFR Single Cab sales at 18.1k and near 10% of total market. In this segment, Chevrolet is less exposed at the Chinese brands attack.

The leader in the car passengers segment still is Hyundai that also claims for the best-selling model with the Verna, an extraordinary success in Egypt, retailed last year in 19.4k units with 9.8% of total market share. Hyundai total sales were 30.6k with 15.5% of share, down 5.3 points from the previous year, when Hyundai was market leader.

Toyota was third, up 1 spot from 2012 and 4 from 2011, with 19k sales and 96% of share, up 2.3 points.

Losing one place from 2012 and 4.6 points of share, Kia ranked 4th confirming a sudden crisis for Korean models in the country, probably due to the strong and growing competition from Chinese players. Indeed, Geely was 5th gaining 3.6points of share, but also the others Chinese had improved their performance.
