Belgium Auto Sales in October 2023 booms 26.7%, growing for the 15th consecutive month and reporting 38,538 new registrations. YTD figures at 413,121 are up 32.6% from the previous year.

Market Trend and Outlook

The Belgian Auto Market in October 2023 booms 26.7%, growing for the 15th consecutive month and reporting 38,538 new registrations. YTD figures at 413,121 are up 33.2% from the previous year.

Medium-Term Market Trend

The car passenger’s market in Belgium is a mature market, with high share taken by premium brands, and in the decade before covid era has been stable, oscillating around half million annual sales.

The arrival of the pandemic caused the market to collapse 21.5% in 2020. This fall in sales, would mark the Belgian market for the following years.

In fact auto sales continued to fall in 2021, dropping another 11.2%. Despite slowing down, the fall continued in 2022 with sales reaching 366,087 (-4.4%).

The continuous increase in vehicle prices is a main driver in the slowing down of sales, making it harder for lower income families to buy cars. Another factor that puts downward pressure on demand is the Eu’s push towards EVs, an expensive alternative to traditional combustion engine cars. These are just a few of the issues that the Belgian auto market is going to have to confront in 2023.

Belgium’s car market in 2021 falls by 11.2% with 383,123 sales, reporting a very severe drop in the second half of the year. BMW is the new leader and the only brand to report a positive performance, gaining 7.1%.

Market Trend

The Belgian car market this year was unable to recover from the pandemic crash of 2020, reporting positive performance only in Q2 and dropped severely in the second half of the year.

In recent years the market was moderately positive, with sales grew up from 486k in 2012 to 550k in 2019, sustained by the positive economic momentum and by the incentives to renovate the car park with green vehicles. In 2019, despite decelerating compared to previous months, registrations reported the 5th annual gain in a row.

The key factors for the development of the industry were the introduction of vehicles with lower CO2 emissions and the country’s economic development. Both factors pushing the market alternatively up and down.

Sales in 2020 were heavily influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting all sectors. In fact, 431,491 units have been sold, reporting a decline of 21.5%.

In 2021 the year started negatively for the Belgian market, in fact, in Q1 119,237 units have been sold, reporting a 6.4% decrease in sales compared to Q1 2020, while in Q2 sales started growing, reporting a 26.9% increase in sales with 113,154 units due to the incredibly low volumes in Q2 2020.

In Q3 sales started falling in double-digits, losing 30.6% sales with 81,176 units, and kept falling 28.9% in Q4 with 69,556 units.

Indeed, Full-Year sales for 2021 have been 383,123, reporting a 11.2% decrease compared to 2020.

Beglium auto market in 2020 falls by 21.5% as the pandemic and lockdowns affect sales. Full-Year sales have been 431.491. BMW lands in second place by jumping 3 spots and registering the best hold on the leaderboard.

Market Trend

The Belgium car market has been hit in 2020 by the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic, which has impacted sales significantly.

After starting the year with a slightly positive trend (+1.5%), the market quickly collapsed in March as the virus struck. The sharpest drop in sales this year was in April when sales declined by 90.1%.

Apparently, the Covid19 diffusion in the country started later compared with South Europe and the Government has not taken any concrete action to avoid the diffusion until mid-March. Then, following the decision taken by all the rest of the surrounding countries, it was decided to shut down all the activities, including automotive manufacturers and dealerships.

In the following months the market recovered quickly thanks to EU incentives, but nevertheless experienced a negative trend for the rest of the year, with double-digit drops reported in August (-24.1%), November (-15.8%), and December (-10.1%).

Indeed, Full-Year sales for 2020 have been 431.491, reporting a decline of 21.5% compared to 2019.

Peugeot maintained 7.8% share despite falling 21.7%.  Renault fell in 4th place while losing 34.1%, followed by Mercedes which lost 16.3% and fell 1 spot.

Audi -up 1 spot- lost 10%, followed by Citroen (-24%) -up 1 spot- and Skoda which jumped 5 spot and lost only 3% sales. Closing the leaderboard we have Opel -down 3 spots- which reported the worst performance in the leaderboard by losing 37.5% and Ford -down 1 spot- losing 25.2%.

The most sold vehicle this year has been the Volkswagen Golf (-35.3%) with 9.655 units sold, followed by the Renault Clio, which lost 21.1% registering 9.315 new sales this year. The Hyundai Tucson (-24.8%) closes the podium by jumping 1 spot and reports 8.203 new units sold.

Belgium Auto Sales in 2019 was flat, signing however the 5th consecutive positive performance. Indeed, the full year ended with registrations stable at 549.931, up just 0.1%. Volkswagen consolidated its leadership position with 9.7% of share, ahead of Renault and Peugeot.

Economic Environment

Belgium economic growth accelerated in the third quarter, after slowing in the second quarter. Although domestic demand eased, it surpassed expectations thanks to surprisingly resilient private consumption. Meanwhile, the external sector weighed less on the overall expansion than in Q2, as a decline in imports cushioned a fall in exports.

Turning to the fourth quarter, growth is expected to slow somewhat: Fixed investment likely remained subdued against the backdrop of weak external demand and lackluster sentiment in the construction and manufacturing sectors. That said, private consumption should buffer the slowdown thanks to a tighter labor market in October.

Market Trend

In recent years the Belgium car passenger market was moderately positive, with sales grew up form 541k in the 2012 to 628k in 2018, sustained by the positive economic momentum and by the incentives to renovate the car park with green vehicles. In 2018, the market marked the fourth annual gain in a row.

However, in 2019, according to data released by the Federation Belgie de L’automobile et du cycle, the market has decelerated, but still reporting a positive performance. Indeed, the full year ended with registrations stable at 549.931, up just 0.1%.

In the competitive landscape, Volkswagen was still the market leader, with 9.7% of share, increasing the gap from the follower, Renault, which held 8.8% of share.

Peugeot held the third position, while Mercedes kept growing year-by-year. Indeed, Mercedes, which has almost doubled its market share during the last decade, reached 6.9% of share.

Belgium Auto Sales in 2018 marginally improved keeping the steady growth of recent years, ending the year with 549.627 sales (+0.6%). Volkswagen – up 4.5% – is the best-selling brand, followed by Renault and Peugeot.

Economic Environment

Belgium weak economic activity grown in the third quarter, roughly in line with analysts’ expectations and matching the second quarter’s outturn. The external sector was lifted by sales and purchases of ships abroad. Meanwhile, domestic demand was flat.

Household spending contracted amid higher inflation and rising unemployment, while fixed-capital spending was stable from a quarter earlier on a fall in business investment and deteriorating industrial metrics through the quarter. Moreover, available fourth-quarter data hints at similarly unremarkable growth through the remainder of the year.

Solid economic fundamentals should support modest growth year, to be led by firmer domestic demand. A tightening labor market and healthy wage growth are expected to underpin a pick-up in household spending, while cheap financing and tighter industrial capacity are likely to sustain fixed investment. Downside risks hinge on the highly-open nature of the economy; a slowdown across the Eurozone and any escalation of trade conflicts could bruise exports.

Market Trend

Belgium vehicles market has been very stable in the last years with a positive score reported in the 2016 (+7.7%), when car passenger’s sales overtook the half million, while in the 2017 sales increase was just a little 1.7%, near 550.000, while in the 2018 the market was moderately positive.

Indeed, according to data released by the Federation Belgie de L’automobile et du cycle, registrations closed the year with 549.627 units sold, with a marginal improvement – up 0.6% – considering the previous year.

Competitive Arena

After having lost the 2017 race, Volkswagen recovered the leadership in the 2018 with 52.738 sales (+4.5%) and a safe gap over all the followers.

In second place Renault with 50.221 (-1.4%) followed by Peugeot with 42.623 (+1.8%), BMW with 40.057 (-5%), Mercedes with 35.526 (-5.1%), Opel with 34.420 (-8.3%), Audi with 28.710 (-13.8%), Ford with 23.830  (-2.6%), Citroen with 23.561 (-5.4%) and in 10th place Hyundai with 21.727 (+11%).

Belgium Auto Sales ended the 2017 with a little +1.2% increase over the previous year. Supported by the government incentive, ended in December, the electric vehicles segment grew up  in the top 10 in the World. Renault won the race in the car passenger’s.

Belgium economy grew at a slower clip in the second quarter, the third-quarter outlook is brighter. Investment spending has picked up, spurred by low-interest rates and growing domestic demand, and should continue to gather momentum in the second half of the year as reforms passed in July begin to take effect. Survey-based data is also encouraging: Consumer confidence soared in September to its highest level since 2001, bolstered by higher wages and a tightening labor market. Higher wages should translate into stronger consumer spending in H2 as disposable income goes up.

Belgium vehicles market has been very stable in the last years with a positive score reported in the 2016 (+7.7%), when car passenger’s sales overtook the half million, while in the 2017 sales increase was just a little 1.7%, near 550.000. The end of special incentives for electric vehicles will hurt this segment in the 2018, after a rapid growth, but total market outlook is still positive.

According to data released by the Federation Belgie de L’automobile et du cycle, in the first half car passenger’s sales have been 322.788, down 1.2%, before to recover during the second , pushed up by AFVs demand, sustained by the “green incentive”, unfortunately ended in December. Final car passenger’s sales have been 546.539 (+1.2%).

At brand-wise, the battle for the leadership has been amazing with Renault winning on the final line with 50.949 sales (-8.8%) overtaking Volkswagen, which sold 50.461 units (-4.8%).

In third place BMW with 42.176 (+4.8%) followed by Peugeot with 41.865 (+11.4%), Opel with 37.553 (-2.4%), Mercedes with 37.419 units (+11.4%) and Audi with 33.323 (+0.3%).

Belgium Cars Market 2016 at the best out of the last five years and at the third best sales level ever after the 2011 record and the 2010. Renault was leader but Infiniti starred as fastest growing brand.

Market Outlook

In November, consumer confidence improved slightly but remained historically low as households continue to be careful with spending. The Belgian economy will likely decelerate compared to last year and, according to a recent report by the Federation of Enterprises in Belgium, the terrorist attacks have played a significant role in hampering growth in several key sectors.

As reported by the FEBIAC  (Federation Belgie de L’automobile et du cycle) the total new cars passengers sold in December had been 33.523, up 2.4%.

The domestic cars industry kept a moderate growing speed, hitting the third best sales level ever, just 32.700 units far from the previous record established in the 2011. The full year sales volume was up 7.7% at 539.520 units, the best out of the last five years.

Competitive Arena

In 2016 Renault triumphed posting almost 56.000 units (+11.7%), while among the highest growths of the year there were DS, Jaguar, Honda, Mazda, Lexus and SsangYong. The best performances were reported by Infiniti (+206.8%).

Chevrolet hit the sharpest slowdown, losing 50.0%, followed by others remarkable losses recorded by Lancia, Lotus, Ferrari, and Citroen.
