Malaysian Vehicles Market in 2019 has reported a stable performance. Indeed, the full-year ended with 592.666 registrations, improving just 1% from the previous year. The leader Perodua held over 40% of share, while Proton jumped in 2nd place.

Economic Environment

Malaysian economy likely lost more steam in the fourth quarter after slowing to the joint lowest reading in three years in the third. The merchandise export slump continued in November, albeit at a softer pace, on declining electronic and petroleum shipments. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate ticked up in November and private credit growth fell to an over one-decade low in October–November, boding poorly for household consumption.

Turning to the 2020, India’s recent decision to curb refined palm oil imports from Malaysia over a political rift could deal a blow to the already fragile external sector. Indian demand accounts for nearly a quarter of all palm oil exports.

Market Trend

Malaysian vehicles market grew up uninterruptedly from 2012 to 2015 hitting the all-time record with 666.745 units, before to decline in the 2016 at 583.219 and again in the 2017. In 2019, according to data released by the Malaysian Automotive Association, the market was stable. Indeed, the full-year ended with 592.666 registrations, improving just 1% from the previous year.

In the competitive landscape, the market leader Perodua kept improving its market share year-by-year, gaining near 10 points of share during the last decade. Indeed, the Malaysian brand ended with over 40% of market share.

After having crumbled from 27.3% of share in 2011 to 10.8% in 2018, Proton (in second position) ended at 16.9% thanks to an astonishing performance (+54.7%). The follower, Honda, reproted a double-digit drop and closing the year with 14.4% of share.

Economic Environment

Recent economic data has been largely underwhelming, even though retail sales continued growing at a robust pace in October and November as consumers benefited from low inflation. Export growth came to a virtual standstill in November on a sharp contraction in shipments of palm oil and palm oil-based products, offsetting a jump in foreign demand for refined petroleum products. Meanwhile, import growth eased on softer demand for consumption goods.

he economy should continue growing at a robust pace this year owing to firm domestic demand. However, while fixed investment growth is expected to pick up, private consumption will likely moderate after its stellar performance in 2018. Lingering global trade tensions and financial-market volatility are the main downside risks to the outlook.

Market Trend

Malaysian vehicles market grew up uninterruptedly from 2012 to 2015 hitting the all-time record with 666.000 units, before to decline in the 2016 at 583.000 and again in the 2017. Indeed, according to data released by the M.A.A., the Malaysian Automotive Association, total vehicles sales in 2017 have been 576.658 (-0.8%).

In the 2018 the market is actually positive, pushed up by the temporary removal of the 6% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on all car purchases since  June. Indeed, the market increased by 3.8% from last year, ending with registrations at 598.742.

Malaysia auto sales in 2017 moderately declined, for the second consecutive year, with domestic brands still losing terrain and Japanese gaining. Perodua still market leader while the stars of the year had been Honda and BMW.

Malaysia’s economy recorded unexpectedly strong annual GDP growth in Q3, posting its most robust expansion in over three years on broad-based gains across the real and external sectors. Domestic demand was propelled by upbeat activity in the manufacturing and services sectors, which both accelerated from the previous quarter. Vibrant household spending signaled the continued health of the private sector and tight labor market dynamics. An acceleration in public spending from a quarter earlier also contributed to the robust fixed investment dynamics on display in Q3.

Malaysia Car Market in 2015 hit new all time record, only 209 units more than in the previous year, thanks to the recovery scored in the fourth quarter, Mercedes shine with over 50% improvement.

Economic Outlook

An internal memo made public on 20 January announced that the state-run oil and gas company, Petronas, would cut USD 11.4 billion from its capital and operating expenditure budgets. The challenges the firm is facing have become more pronounced as recent developments in the global energy markets have lead many industry experts to revise their outlook in favor of a slower recovery in energy prices.

Dividends from Petronas represented the government’s largest source of non-tax revenue in 2015 and, although these dividends are expected to contract 38.5% this year, they will likely continue to be the most significant source of non-tax revenue. Such developments are indicative of a shift in Malaysia’s trade dynamics as the contribution of hydrocarbons and palm oil to the country’s export profile is diminishing in favor of a larger role for burgeoning manufactured exports.

Market Outlook

Thanks to a positive Q4 with sales up 2% from the correspondent period last year, the Malaysia vehicles market ended the 2016 in positive, beating the record achieved in the previous year albeit a weak first half performance.

Indeed according to data released by the M.A.A., the Malaysian Automotive Association, the total vehicles sales in the 2015 had been down 666.674, up 0.1% or 209 units. This sales level represents the new all time record but has not been celebrated by the industry which had expected an almost better performance and that is now forecasting a difficult 2016.

Actually Malaysia ranks as the World’s 21st market, the third in the South East Asia.

Competitive Arena

The market leader Perodua performed the new record selling 213.303 vehicles (+9.1%) with 32.0% of market share.

These top 4 brands held the 77% of market share.

A really astonishing performance was scored by Mercedes, advanced 4 spots in 10th place with 11.034 sales (+54.7%)

As far as the ranking by group, in the year to date Perodua was obviously the leader with 32.0% of market share ahead of Proton with 15.3%, Toyota with 15.3% and Honda with 14.3%.
