Laos car market in 2021 rises by 25.5% with 20,910 sales, reporting a very strong performance all year, except for Q3 when sales remained flat. Leader Toyota surpasses 50% market share this year, rising by 51.1%.

Economic Environment

After GDP growth faced some obstacles in the first half of last year, the economy seemingly remained downbeat in H2: High Covid-19 cases in early July forced authorities to extend social-distancing measures nationwide and tighten them in the capital, Vientiane. However, restrictions seemed to ease slightly towards the end of the year, with the lockdown in Luang Prabang city lifted on 1 November.

Meanwhile, the China-Laos railway was opened in early December, promising deeper access to the Asian giant’s economy. Moving on to this year, Covid-19 infection rates are on the rise with daily case numbers reaching four digits, boding ill for activity ahead. In other news, the IMF concluded its Article IV consultation on 22 December. It highlighted the impact of the health crisis on economic momentum, and pointed out emerging risks stemming from inflation and currency depreciation.

Market Trend

Laos’s car market this year recovered effectively from the pandemic crash, with sales increasing in double-digits in all quarters except for Q3.

Following the rapid development of the market in the years immediately after the end of the dictatorship, in the last three years, the Laos vehicles market suffered from declining sales, despite the still fast-growing economy.

In 2018 the total light-vehicle sales were 19,560, down 7.9% from the previous year. The market lost steam despite in the previous three years several new brands landed in the market and actually all the top brands are on sales, while not all successfully.

In 2019 the market finally moderately recovered with final sales at 21,079 units, up 7.7%. The car passenger segment, which counts 31% of the total light vehicles market, declined 7.2%, but this loss was more than balanced by the growth of the LCVs (mainly pickups) up a robust 16.4%.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic sales fell in  2020. In fact, 16,666 units have been sold, reporting a decline of 20.9% compared to 2019.

In 2021 the year started positively for the Laos market, in fact, in Q1 5,149 units have been sold, reporting a 28.9% increase in sales compared to Q1 2020, while in Q2 sales started growing quickly, reporting a 42.1% increase in sales with 5,255 units sold due to the incredibly low sales volume registered the previous year.

On the other hand, in Q3 sales remained flat (+0.2%) with just 5,215 units sold, while in Q4 sales rose again by 40.3% with 5,291 units sold.

Brand-wise, this year the leader Toyota (+51.5%) gained 6.9% market share, followed by Hyundai (+32.1%), which gained only 0.1% share. Ford (+33.6%) remained third and gained 0.2% market share.

The most sold model in the country remains the Toyota Hilux with 4,485 sales (+59.2%).

Laos auto market in 2020 falls by 20.9% as the pandemic,  lockdowns, and fall in tourism affect sales. Full-Year sales have been 16.666, while the leaders Toyota and Hyundai plummet by 33.2% and 42.8% respectively.

Economic Environment

The pandemic and measures to contain its spread both domestically and abroad have hammered the economy this year. Despite the low number of reported local cases, the global health crisis has dealt an especially severe blow to the tourism sector, investment, and exports—key sources of foreign exchange—worsening the country’s external liquidity problems and increasing credit risks.

Moreover, rising countercyclical spending and falling revenue have derailed the government’s fiscal consolidation efforts. That said, large-scale development initiatives such as the China-Laos railway and other projects relating to mining and tourism continue to progress.

Against this backdrop, the government reopened some local borders in late October and is intensifying its efforts to boost economic prospects and improve the business climate, including by pledging to facilitate investment from the private sector.

Market Trend

Laos car market has been hit in 2020 by the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic and by the consequent drop in tourism, which has impacted sales significantly.

Following the rapid development of the market in the years immediately after the end of the dictatorship, in the last three years, the Laos vehicles market suffered from declining sales, despite the still fast-growing economy.

In 2018 the total light-vehicle sales were 19.560, down 7.9% from the previous year. The market lost steam despite in the previous three years several new brands landed in the market and actually all the top brands are on sales, while not all successfully.

Indeed, Full-Year sales for 2020 have been 16.666, reporting a decline of 20.9% compared to 2019.

Brand-wise, this year the leader Toyota (-33.2%) lost 3.3% market share, followed by Hyundai (-42.8%), which lost 3.4% share. Ford (+1.8%) remained third and gained 0.5% market share.

The most sold model in the country remains the Toyota Hilux with 2.817 sales (-34.2%).

Laos vehicles sales in the 2019 the market is finally moderately recovering  with sales at 21.078 units, up 7.7%. The car passenger segment, which count 31% of the total light vehicles market, declined 7.2%, but this lost was more than balanced by the pickups growth.

Economic Environment

Laos economy growth likely remains robust, buttressed by the ongoing construction of the flagship Laos-China railway. Moreover, the recent start of operations at the 1285-megawatt Xayaburi Dam should be supporting the external sector, while merchandise exports were up over 9% in H1, which, coupled with modest import growth, caused the trade deficit to fall year-on-year. Less positively, however, the expansion in credit slowed considerably in Q1–Q3 compared to the 2018 average.

Economic growth should be broadly stable next year, supported by infrastructure investment and stronger electricity exports thanks to new hydropower projects. However, fiscal austerity could hold back activity somewhat. A shaky external position, fairly high public debt and significant exposure to China pose downside risks to the outlook.

Market Trend

Following the rapid development of the market in the years immediately after the end of dictatorship, in the last three years the Laos vehicles market suffered with declining sales, despite the still fast growing economy.

In the 2018 the total light vehicles sales were 19.560, down 7.9% from the previous year. The market lost steam despite in the previous three years several new brands landed in the market and actually all the top brands are on sales, while not all successfully.

In the 2019 the market finally moderately recovered with final sales at 21.078 units, up 7.7%. The car passenger segment, which count 31% of the total light vehicles market, declined 7.2%, but this lost was more than balanced by the growth of the LCVs (mainly pickups) up a robust 16.4%.

The market was dominated by Hyundai until the 2015. But when the doors have been fully opened to competitions Toyota has taken the leadership improving the market share year after year, up to a record of 37.9% in the 2018, losing over 1 point of share in the 2019.

Hyundai declined and actually is third, behind the local brand Daehan, specialized in light trucks and pickups, which in the 2019 recovered 6 points of share.

Lao vehicles sales were negative again in the 2018 as in the previous two years, mainly due to the fall of HCVs and the over 50% sales lost by the local producer, Daeham. Toyota dominates with over 40% of market share. The 2019-2025 outlook is positive.

Economic Environment

Laos economy grew 6.7% in the 2018 on strong manufacturing and services sectors, likely among the fastest expansions in the region and began 2019 on a strong footing.

Hydroelectric generation should remain a key driver of growth in Q1, while infrastructure projects, such as the Laos–China railway and the building of several hydropower dams, should also propel momentum. That being said, agricultural output, particularly of rice, is likely being hampered by damage caused by flooding last year.

In early February, the government unveiled its National Development Vision for 2021–2025. The plan aspires to steer the country away from natural resource dependency and to bolster the private sector through pro-business reforms and improved access to business capital.

Market Trend

Following the rapid development of the market in the years immediately after the end of dictatorship, in the last three years the Laos vehicles market suffered with declining sales, despite the still fast growing economy.

Among the light vehicles, the commercial have over 50% of mix with car passenger’s sales just over the 9.000 units.

The market has lost steam despite in the last three years several new brands landed in the market and actually all the top brands are on sales, while not all successfully. In the market there are also several Chinese brand, with Wuling as best seller, with 107 sales in the 2018.
