Economic Environment

Jordan economy accelerated slightly in Q3, buttressed by a large contribution from the finance, insurance and business services sector. However, the expansion remained weak by historical standards, weighed on by stalled construction activity. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate dipped to 19.1% in Q3 from Q2’s over one-decade high of 19.2%. Turning to Q4, available data is mixed.

On the one hand, industrial production contracted for the seventh consecutive month in October. However, merchandise exports increased again in October compared to the same month a year earlier, contributing to a notable narrowing of the trade deficit in January–October.

Economic Environment

Jordan economy improved in 2018 according to preliminary data, despite a lethargic year for economic growth through to the third quarter—the latest period for which GDP data is publicly available. In late January, the prime minister announced that the fiscal deficit had fallen to 2.3% of GDP in 2018, down from 2.6% in 2017, and that public debt had notched down to 94.0% from 94.3% in the previous year.

Increased tourism activity, the recent re-opening of trade routes with Iraq and Syria and improved gas supplies from abroad, particularly Egypt, should underpin economic growth in 2019. However, fiscal consolidation and tighter monetary policy dampen prospects.

Indeed, the market closed with registrations at 30.353, less than half of the 2014 All time record.

]]> Jordan Vehicles Market 2016 was heavy negative hit by the economic crisis and growing unemployment. Toyota reduced the lost and overtook the former leader, Hyundai, struggling more than others.

The Syrian civil war and regional instability continued to weigh on Jordan’s economy in the third quarter of 2016, causing the economy to slow further. Moreover, in Q3 the unemployment rate continued to grow as conditions in the labor market worsened, due to the large number of refugees seeking jobs. On the upside, in the last quarter of the year consumer confidence gained some strength.

Auto sales had been penalized by the economic environment shown a negative mood across the entire year with the fourth quarter deeply down. Full year sales fell down at 44.777 registrations, down 27.4% from the previous year, declining for the second time in a row.

The battle for leadership was won by Toyota, able to overtake Hyundai despite losing 7% of volume. However, Hyundai lost 49.6% and was among the worse y.o.y. in the entire market. Third was Kia, down 25.8%, followed by Mitsubishi, down 62%, Nissan, -18% and Isuzu, up in triple digit.

]]> Jordan Vehicles Market in 2015 down in double-digit despite growing demand for mobility from the over 1.3 million Syrian refugee. The market is concentrated in the top 3 brands, holding 75% of sales.

Country Outlook

Persistent domestic and regional challenges likely weighed on Jordan’s economic growth through 2015, as the country is burdened with hosting over 1.3 million Syrian refugees who have taken shelter in the Kingdom thanks to its open border policy.

Jordan had been receiving significant international and regional aid to help cope with the humanitarian crisis, but the cash flow has declined in recent months. In an official statement released on 3 February, King Abdullah II stressed the need for further support as the Kingdom’s capacity to handle the crisis is reaching its limits.

He also mentioned that a revision of the country’s border policy will be necessary should the international community fail to provide more support.

Market Outlook

Jordan vehicles market is heavily influenced by effects of the huge immigration of Syrian refugees several of which has now started up their own activity in the new country as perspectives to came back at home are far and Jordan is a modern and welcoming state.

Following the negative impact over the market reported for the 2014, in case of the 2015 the market was really sustained by new consumer’s demand and albeit their focus was more on pre-owned than on new vehicles.

Total vehicles sales in the 2015 had been 61.713, down 11.3% from the previous year data.

Market leader was Hyundai, the leader is almost all the Levant area together with the twin brand Kia, selling 21.268 vehicles (-32.3%) and was followed in the podium by Toyota with 13.731 units (+39.5%) and Kia with 11.490 (-31.9%). the three leader together held three-quarters of the market!
