69,64 million Cars were sold world wide in 2023 up to October, a 6.9% increase in sales from 2022.

China remains the leading global market with 20.12 million sales, falling 1.8%. This huge market accounts for 28.9% of all global sales.

USA, in second position, registers 12.86 million new cars rising 12.5% and holding 18.5% of global market share.

In third position ranks Japan with 3.80 million units sold and  a +14.8% in sales (5.5% market share), followed by India which posted 3.73 million sales (+8.9%), Germany in 5th reports sales at 2.36 million (+13.4%), followed by Mexico with 2.16 million units sold (+24.2%).

UK follows closely with 1.85 million in sales (+16.4%), in front of France with 1.75 million in sales (+14.3%).

At the edge of the top 10 rankings, we find Brazil, with sales at  1.74 million (+11.4%) and finally Italy accumulating 1.44 million new registrations in 2023 (+19.4%).

Looking at cumulative data up to September 2023 brand-wise, the leader Toyota is on top of the rankings with 47.4% market share and 19,667 sales (-9.0%) and a huge gap over all others.

In second place MG with 4,271 units sold (+14.7%), followed by the Hyundai reporting a strong loss in volume and accumulating 3,015 sales (+21.4%).

Looking at specific models the Toyota Hilux maintains leadership despite reporting a 35.5% year-on-year loss in sales, followed by the Toyota Land Cruiser up 8.7%.

Medium-Term Market Trend

Omani vehicles market was one of the fastest-growing worldwide in the period 2003-2013 and, at the end of a long series of annual all-time records, the market achieved a significant level of 213,000 sales in 2013.

Unfortunately, the economic crisis created by the fall of oil price in the international market and the persistently low level of this primary resource for the country economy severely hit the demand for consumers good, and the new vehicles market started a decline not yet ended.

Despite postponing the VAT introduction, the government has not been able to improve the economic trend, and even in 2019, the new light vehicles market has lost terrain. 

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic sales further fell in  2020 and in 2021 the recovery did not started with sales reaching the lowest level in the last 15 years at 74.700.

In 2022 Oman’s economic recovery is gaining traction, supported by revival in the hydrocarbon sector and the relaxation of Covid-19 social restrictions. High oil prices, continued fiscal consolidation under the authorities’ Medium Term Fiscal Plan, and determined implementation of structural reforms under Oman Vision 2040, are expected to generate fiscal and external surpluses and support higher growth over the medium term. However, heightened global uncertainties continue to cloud the outlook, with downside risks dominating in the short run.

In second position we find the Tesla Model 3 with 4.2% share and 3,118 new registrations (+52.2%), ahead of the Suzuki Swift with 2,922 sales (+22.5%).

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross moves falls 1 spot into 4th with 2,489 sales (+1.9%), followed by the MG ZS with 2,470 new registrations (+24.7%).

Tesla Model Y rises 27 spots into 6th with 2,453 sales (+315.8%), followed by the Mitsubishi Outlander -down 6 spots- with 2,348 registrations (-62.6%) and the BYD Atto 3 -up 30 spots- at 2,226 units sold (+375.6%).

At the bottom of the leaderboard, the Mitsubishi ASX ranks in 9th with 1,887 sales (-4.3%) and the Hyundai Tucson closes the Top 10 jumping 18 spots with 1,861 new registrations (+123.7%).

The Thai Automotive industry is still the global hub for mid size pick ups, being the type of vehicle preferred by locals in years. This trend is confirmed by the Isuzu D-Max leading the rankings with 69,368 cumulative registrations (-12.4%), followed closely by the Toyota Hillux with 56,117 sales (-16.5%). 

The passenger car Toyota Yaris Ativ rises 6 spots into 3rd reporting 25,861 sales (+147.9%), followed by the Honda City at 22,224 (-8.5%) and the Ford Ranger with 14,480 units sold (+8.1%).

In 6th place the Toyota Fortuner with 13,477 sales (+3.1%) ahead of the Toyota Corolla with 11,720 registrations (-4.5%) and the Isuzu Mu-x -up 4 spots- with 11,349 units sod(+39.8%).

The Honda CR-V jumps 4 spots into 9th with 11,243 sales(+76.2%) and in 10th place the BYD Atto 3 rises 139 spots with 9,310 units sold.

Ford maintains 4th position with 74,111 sales (-8.4%), while Peugeot moves down 1 spot accumulating 69,294 sales (-17.7%), followed by Dacia at 67,369 (+9.3%) and Renault at 59,715 registrations (-19.8%).

Citroen falls into 8th position with 55,863 sales (-13.8%), in front of Audi at 51,081 (+0.2%) and Jeep in 10th with 51,479 registrations (-18.9%).
