Algeria 2015. Market dropped 25%. Dacia and Renault shine

Algeria Vehicles Market in 2015 dropped 25% reporting the second heavy lost in a row. However, Renault and Dacia had been stable gaining several points of share and now dominate the competition.

Economic Outlook

The panorama for Algeria is somber amid low oil prices and widespread speculation concerning the health of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and what implications this could have on future governance as a potential power struggle looms.

Bouteflika has made very few public appearances in the last years and prominent allies of the ailing president fear that the economy is not being handled properly and could unleash political instability.

To further compound this issue, the latest OPEC report showed that oil and gas earnings dropped sharply as the Saharan Blend was 47.5% cheaper in 2015 than in 2014. In January, prices for electricity went up as subsidies were cut.

In the same month, Algeria sought external funding for the first time in a decade, securing support from China to boost the economy by financing a port to the tune of USD 3.2 billion.

Market Outlook

The 2015 was a year to forget for people working in Algerian vehicles market. Indeed sales had been awful with the market declining between 20 and 30% month after month founding the light just in December, when sales rose 5%.

According to data release by the local Transportation Authorities, full year sales had been 252.521, down a huge 25.5% from the previous year falling out of the Top 30 world’s market down in the 38th place.

The market fall is really dramatic considering the record scored only two years ago was at 423.277 units!

In the general nightmare, Renault group can smile, as the two brands,Renault and Dacia, first and second in the market, reported a -4.9% and a +2.4% compared with 2014.

Renault was market leader with 49.494 sales and 19.6% of market share while Dacia followed with 40.688 and 16.1% of share.

In third place, Peugeot, outpaced by Dacia, with 36.323 units (-13.1%) ahead of Hyundai with 31.306 (-20.4%), Toyota with 19.627 (+17.0%) and Kia with 15.099 (-40%).

Dacia Logan was the best-selling model with 22.118 sales followed by the Renault Symbol with 21.614 and the Hyundai Accent with 19.525.
