Medium-Term Market Trend

The Algerian vehicle market grew from 201,382 in 2010 to 298,043 sales by the end of 2013. In 2014 demand for light vehicles fell substantially for the following 3 years, dropping more than 50% to 99,481 in 2017. The market bounced back in 2018 rising up to 149,858 by the end of 2019.

The Covid-19 restrictions caused the vehicle market in Algeria to collapse 83.1%, down to 25,286 sales, the lowest levels of the previous decade.

In 2021 sales grew up to 30,178. In 2022 demand for light vehicles began to fall again, with the year projected to close around 23k (-22.5%). A combination of factors are behind the current industry struggle: restrictions imposed on light vehicle imports and lack of raw materials world wide, in particular for the production of microchips. Both of these factors have made it more and more expensive to buy a light vehicle in Algeria.

Zimbabwe vehicles market remains almost flat despite the global pandemic. Indeed, Full Year 2020 sales have been 2.603, down 1.3% compared to 2019. Toyota remains the market leader with 17% market share.

Economic Environment

Zimbabwe’s economy contracted by 12.8% in 2019 due to poor performance in mining, tourism, and agriculture. Foreign currency and electricity shortages affected mining and tourism.

Agriculture shrank about 15.8% due to cyclone Idai in March 2019, prolonged drought, livestock diseases, and currency shortages reducing the availability of inputs. Despite a global mineral price recovery, production in Zimbabwe dropped below 2018 levels.

Market Trend

Despite the COVID-19 striking, the Zimbabwe vehicle market remains almost unaffected, reporting flat sales compared to the previous year.

Zimbabwe’s new vehicles market grew up until 2013 when sales hit the record of 7.860 units, before to rapidly decline at 3.754 in 2016 – as the economic crisis moved demand on cheaper used vehicles – and at only 3.345 in 2017. Car market down five years in a row https://www.focus2move.com/botswana-vehicles/ Thu, 24 Sep 2020 10:00:59 +0000 https://focus2move.com/?p=37230 Botswana vehicles sales in 2018 went down for the third time in a row, registering 6.468 units (-3.5%). The market was still dominated by Toyota, with 42.4% of share, followed by Nissan and Isuzu, both improving in double digits.

]]>
Botswana vehicles market in 2020 reported substantial losses as the pandemic influences sales. Indeed, 3.179 units were sold Year To Date until August, losing 22.1% compared to last year. Toyota maintains leadership and performs better than the market average, losing 17.3%, while the top 10 gainer was Volkswagen, with only a 6% decrease in sales.

Economic Environment

The economy will have deteriorated sharply in the second quarter, as Covid-19 headwinds are set to have hammered activity. Containment measures at home likely shredded household incomes and delayed non-essential spending, while depressed business sentiment, particularly in the key mining and quarrying sector, will have hindered investment activity.

Meanwhile, diamond exports, which account for around 90% of all exports, nosedived by 99.4% year-on-year in the second quarter, largely owing to pandemic-related lockdowns and disrupted supply chains.

Turning to Q3, although the easing of lockdown measures should provide a boost, a persistently high infection rate could weigh on activity.

Market Trend Year To Date

In Botswana 3.179 units have been sold until august 2020, reporting a loss of 22.1% compared to last year. This negative trend in the market reflects the impact of the pandemic in the region, where infections reached a peak between July and August.

Brand-wise, Toyota remains in leadership, while performing better than the market trend (-17.3%),  followed by Nissan, falling by 29.8%. The worst top 10 performance was registered by Mazda with a 38.1% decrease in sales. Meanwhile, the top  10 performer is Volkswagen, decreasing sales by only 6% and jumping 2 spots in the ranking.

Medium Terms Market Trend

Botswana’s vehicles market was influenced by the slow domestic economy, which reduced the consumer’s demand for new vehicles. Indeed, the car market reported a contraction in 2016 and 2017, after a peak of 7.650 sales hit in 2015, registering 6.743 units in 2017.

In 2018, the market kept falling, signing the third consecutive year of decline in a row. Indeed, the year ended with sales at 6.468, down 3.5%.

In 2019 the market followed the previous year’s trend, the year ended with 6.205 sales, down 4%.

In Q1 2020 there were 1.623 units sold, only a 1.7% decrease compared to last year. In the First Half of 2020 the market dropped down to 2.078, a 33% decrease in sales.

Uganda 2019. Auto market hit the highest volume in the decade https://www.focus2move.com/uganda-automotive-industry/ Mon, 06 Apr 2020 09:00:29 +0000 https://www.focus2move.com/?p=68444 Ugandan vehicles market in 2019 reached a peak of 2.864 units (including HCVs), soaring 28.4% from the previous year, hitting the highest volume of the entire decade. The podium was unchanged, with Toyota holding over 40% of the market.

Uganda’s economic figures in final quarter of 2019 are mixed, following a marked slowdown in the third quarter. The private sector PMI improved in Q4 compared to Q3, underpinned by increasing customer numbers. Meanwhile, economic activity softened in Q4, while merchandise export growth eased in the same period on slower growth of coffee exports.

New vehicles market has hit the record of the decade in 2019 after a tough period. Indeed, the market is still really limited, representing only a marginal quota on the import of vehicles, and there are no signs of Government actions to limit the import of exhaust and obsolete used-vehicles. Additionally, improved economic environment is not enough to sustain private consumer demand, considering the very low pro capita income.

In 2017, total vehicles sales have been 2.193 (-8.9%) while in 2018 marginally recovered with 2.231 units sold (+2.1%).

In 2019, the reached a peak of 2.864 units (including HCVs), soaring 28.4% from the previous year, hitting the highest volume of the entire decade.

Brand-wise, Toyota kept dominating with over 40% of the market, while Nissan and Tata held the podium respectively with 17.8% and 10.6% of share.

Africa best selling cars in 2019 have seen the Toyota Hilux back on top of the ranking with 4.9% of share, just a few units ahead of the former leader, the Volkswagen Polo. Isuzu D-Max and Toyota Hiace signed stunning performances, landing respectively in 6th and 11th place.

Economic Environment

Africa’s economic growth has stabilized at 3.4 percent in 2019 and is expected to pick up to 3.9 percent in 2020 and 4.1 percent in 2021 but to remain below historical highs. Growth’s fundamentals are also improving, with a gradual shift from private consumption toward investment and exports. For the first time in a decade, investment accounted for more than half the continent’s growth, with private consumption accounting for less than one third.

Market Trend

After temporarily losing the leadership, the Toyota Hilux wen back on top in 2019, holding 4.9% of the market. The First generation Hilux was born in 1968 and in this 50 years was followed by regular updates. The Hilux has gained a reputation for exceptional sturdiness and reliability during sustained heavy use or even abuse.

A few units behind, we find the best passenger car and the 2018 leader, the Volkswagen Polo holding 4.9% while declining 8.1%, followed by the Renault Symbol and the Ford Ranger, respectively at 4.3% and 2.6%.

In fifth place the Chevrolet TFR with 1.8% of market share, ahead of the fast-growing (+127.5%) Isuzu D-Max, landing in 6th position.

Behind, all models registered negative performances. Indeed, in seventh place, the Nissan NP200 – down in double-digits – with 1.5%, followed – just a few units behind – by the Hyundai Tucson, the Toyota Corolla (-39%) and the Toyota Fortuner.

Botswana 2018. Car market down three years in a row https://www.focus2move.com/botswana-2018-car-market-down-three-years-in-a-row/ Sat, 20 Jul 2019 08:00:58 +0000 https://www.focus2move.com/?p=68414 Botswana vehicles sales in 2018 went down for the third time in a row, registering 6.468 units (-3.5%). The market was still dominated by Toyota, with 42.4% of share, followed by Nissan and Isuzu, both improving in double digits.

Botswana’s economy was relatively weak in the final stretch of 2018, after growth slowed to a one-year low in the third quarter due to a contraction in mining output. Growth of bank lending to households moderated in October–November compared to the Q3 average which, coupled with higher inflationary pressures in Q4, likely dragged on consumer spending gains.

On the external front, merchandise exports plunged in November due to significantly lower shipments of diamonds, which led to the largest monthly trade deficit in over six years. This follows similarly disappointing trade metrics in October, suggesting that the external sector may have weighed on overall activity in Q4.

The Botwana’s vehicles market was influenced by the slow domestic economy, which reduced consumer’s demand for new vehicles. Indeed, the car market reported a contraction in 2016 and 2017, after the peak of 7.650 sales hit in 2015, registering 6.743 units in 2017.

In 2018, the market kept falling, signing the third consecutive year of decline in a row. Indeed, the year ended with sales at 6.468, down 3.5%.

In the competitive landscape, Toyota – the market leader – has sold 2.743 vehicles (+10.5%) with market share at 42.4%. In second place, Nissan with 1.027 units (+17.9%) ahead of Isuzu with 437 (+49.7%).

Market Outlook

After a series of negative performances, the Botswana’s market was still on a negative track in 2018, signing the third year of decline in a row. Indeed, the market is expected to be still unstable during the 2019-2025 period of time.
