UK Auto Market hits the best-ever December fueled by strong fleet demand and expanded economy. Ford has won the year-end rush while Vauxhall has lost. BMW and Mini boomed joining the podium as brand and as model.

Economic Outlook

The British economy has been growing at rates below 0.7% throughout 2015 and revised data show that Q3’s GDP growth was no exception. The economy expanded 0.5% on a sequential basis, thus decelerating over Q2’s increase.

Weaknesses were recorded in private consumption growth as well as in exports, which are struggling due to a strong pound and feeble external demand. In late November, the government delivered the combined Autumn Statement and Comprehensive Spending review which included no big changes in the path of government borrowing for the next three years.

In the political arena, Prime Minister David Cameron is trying to strike a deal with the EU leaders on the country’s membership terms in the union, including a controversial plan to curb migrants’ benefits. The PM hopes to finalize a deal before February of next year.

Market Outlook

The market ended the 2015 with a a new record with the best-ever December sales level at 180.077 units, up 8.4%, a new record in an amazing row started 46 months ago. Indeed, in all the period market grew but in October 2015 when a little 1.4% down has broken the record series while unchanging the basic market sentiment.

Thanks to this series, according to figures released by The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (S.M.M.T.) the UK Market scored the All-Time record volume at 2.633.503 units (up 6.3% from the previous year).

A record volume in Western Europe is something missed since 2009 when Germany has broken the record pushed by heavy incentives, while this record arrives without incentives and just pushed by a strong private and fleet demand fueled by a stable growing economy.

We will come back soon on analyzing this record with a dedicated report while at the moment we stand on December performance review.

Competitive Arena

Pushed up by year-end fleet purchases, Ford scored a +13.4% at 23.261 units winning the battle against Vauxhall (Opel in the tables below) less requested by fleet than one year ago and falling 10.1% at 20.830 sales. In third, BMW sold 17.181 (+38.1%) overtaking Volkswagen that has reduced the lost from the previous two months (-0.4%) with 14.415 sales.

As far as the group’s performance, in December the leader Volkswagen has lost 2.6% of sales with market share declined at fell at 17.3% and was followed by BMW at 13.6%, Ford at 12.9%,  and General Motors at 11.6% .

As far as best-selling models ranking, in December the Ford Fiesta was again on top with 8.977 sales (+19.6%), followed by the Vauxhall Corsa (Opel) with 6.914 (-1.2%) and  the Mini with 5.371 (+133.5%).

UK 2014. Auto Market scored the highest performance since 2004 https://www.focus2move.com/uk-car-market-2/ Mon, 12 Jan 2015 06:30:59 +0000 http://focus2move.com/?p=11881 UK Car Market 2014 scored the highest performance since 2004 and fourth-largest of all time. 2014 UK Car Market scored the highest performance since 2004 and fourth-largest of all time. The 2014 brand ranking confirms Ford on top with Renault the most dynamic among top manufacturers. Ford Fiesta is again the best-selling car in UK.

In December 2014 according to data released by S.M.M.T, total new Car Passengers sold have been 166.198, up 8.7% from the correspondent month last year. Every month in 2014 saw an increase, with December rise the 34th consecutive month of growth.

Full Year 2014 sales have been 2.476.435 (up 9.3% from the previous year), the highest performance since 2004 and fourth-largest of all time; only 2002, 2003 and 2004 saw more cars registered.

UK remains second largest market in EU (behind Germany and ahead of France, Italy and Spain), and recorded second-largest growth of these top five EU markets.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “UK new car registrations returned to pre-recession levels in 2014, as pent-up demand from the recession years combined with confidence in the economy saw consumer demand for the latest models grow consistently and strongly.

“The year was particularly strong for alternatively-fuelled vehicles as increased choice, coupled with a growing desire for reduced costs and greater efficiency, resulted in a quadrupling of plug-in car registrations over 2013. With a variety of new plug-in models expected in 2015, this area of the market will continue to grow significantly. For the market as a whole, we expect a more stable 2015 as demand levels off.”

Looking just at the full year ranking (you can sort it on the table’s top line), the 2013 podium was confirmed, with Ford kept leadership with 326.643 sales, +5.1%, with share at 13.2%, down only 0.5 points from year ago.

Opel was second with 269.177 units, +3.8% and a share of 10.9%, while Volkswagen was third with 214.828 sales, +10.7% and share at 8.7%.

However, the year will be remembered for a very good performance scored by Renault in 15th absolute place with 66.334 sales, +43.7% from the previous year, together with Dacia (23rd), Mitsubishi (25th) and Jeep (30th).

In the best-selling models ranking, the 2014 confirmed the top 3 of year ago. Ford Fiesta was again on top (as in 2013) with 131.254 cumulative sales, +7.6%, followed by Ford Focus and Vauxhall (Opel) Corsa respectively with 85.140 and 81.873 sales.

2014 saw a remarkable surge in demand for ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs): registrations of plug-in cars increased four-fold from 3,586 in 2013 to 14,498 in 2014
