In the 2020 the pandemic arrival caused prolonged shutdown in plants and dealership and the market really collapsed losing 40.8% versus the previous year, hitting the worse level out if the previous seven years.

Economic Environment

Philippines’ economy The economy likely ended 2018 on a strong note, with Q4’s average PMI print posting the strongest quarterly result of the year and cash remittances sustaining solid growth in October and November. Nevertheless, the trade deficit remained elevated near a record high in November, as exports contracted on a drop in electronic parts shipments.

The economic outlook for 2019 remains promising thanks to a thriving domestic economy. Solid household spending, fueled by remittances, and strong investment, which should be driven in part by the government’s infrastructure program, should underpin domestic demand.

However, if the government budget standoff drags on, H1 growth could be hampered significantly.

Philippines Vehicles Market in the 2017 hit the fifth all time record in a row, just before the Tax Reform, which has introduced higher duties on vehicles and fuel. The market grew near 500.000 units with Toyota leader ahead of Mitsubishi and Hyundai.

Philippines growth in economic activity slowed somewhat in the fourth quarter of 2017, according to the latest indicators. Retail sales expanded annually in both October and November, but at a decelerating pace. Moreover, after October’s robust rebound, annual growth in exports eased significantly in the following month.

On 19 December, President Duterte signed into law the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN), which came into effect at the beginning of 2018. The TRAIN entails lower personal income tax rates for most of the population; only the top rate increased from 32% to 35%.

The package also includes higher duties on cars, fuel and sugary drinks, which makes the revenue impact of the reform uncertain.

Philippines vehicles market in the last decade boomed resulting one of the top 3 fastest growing market in the World. Recently, total vehicles sales grew up from 170.827 in the 2012 to a record of 483.734 in the 2017 and a new record is projected for the end of the 2017, not far from the half million level.

In the 2018 the market is actually foreseen at a new hit, but the Government has anticipated to the automotive industry the intention to introduce new duties, from January, with immediate effects on final vehicles price.

The market is concentrated in the hands of Japanese brands, while Hyundai is progressively taking space. In the full year 2017, the market leader, Toyota sold  182.677 vehicles (+15.1%) with market share at 37.5%.

In second place, Mitsubishi with 65.859 (Mitsubishi Fuso not included) sales (+17.8%) and in third Hyundai with 37.678 (+11.8%).

In fourth place Ford with 36.714 (+9.0%) followed by Honda with 31.758 (+36.9%) and Isuzu with 30.187 (+10.3%).

At model-wise, the best selling car was the Toyota Fortuner with 39.680 sales (+39.0%) followed by the Toyota Vios with 36.734 (+1.3%) and the Toyota Innova with 24.434 (+34.7%).

Philippines Auto Sales 2016 hit the fifth All Time Record in a series, joining the Top 30 World’s market for the very first time. Toyota led again the market while Hyundai outpaced Ford for the third place.

After Q3’s impressive GDP reading, recent high frequency indicators suggest that growth in the Philippines likely moderated in the final quarter of the year. Growth in manufacturing activity, despite remaining robust, most probably slowed slightly in the fourth quarter according to leading indicators.

Moreover, the typhoon that hit the Philippines in December caused extensive damage, cutting off power to millions and negatively affecting agricultural production.

The automotive industry is a key fuel of booming economy and in the 2016 has beaten many records. The domestic sales hit the all time record for the 5th year in a row, outpacing the milestone of 0.4 million vehicles, just four years after having outplaced the 0.2 million, showing the best trend in the World.

According to data reported by AVID, Campi and TMA, vehicles sales had been 419.063, near 100.000 more than in the previous year, up 27.4%, the second best annual increase among the Top 60 vehicles market in the World (a 0.1 less than the best, Iran).

Toyota improved sales by 25.4% at 158.715 units and was followed by Mitsubishi (+13.1%), Hyundai (+52.8%), Ford (+32.8%) and Isuzu (+21.2%).

Toyota dominates.

]]>
Philippines Vehicles Market in 2015 celebrates the new all-time record with sales for the first time above the 300.000 and volumes improved over 300% in the last 7 years. Toyota dominates.

Economic Outlook

The economy gained steam in the final quarter of 2015, growing a stronger-than-expected 6.3%. This pushed full year economic growth to 5.8%. Q4’s acceleration was underpinned by upticks in fixed investment and private consumption as well as by buoyant public spending.

While government spending in the past often fell short of official targets, the strong readings observed in Q3 and Q4 are related to the upcoming presidential elections in May.

Throughout 2015, household spending benefited from remittances inflows and a dynamic business outsourcing sector, while fixed investment was sustained by the government’s infrastructure projects. In fact, the strength of the domestic economy more than compensated for shrinking exports, which suffered from turmoil in China and other emerging markets, in Q4 and in 2015 as a whole.

Market Outlook

in the 2015 the automotive industry celebrated the seventh all time record in a row, the best growing string actually in place world-wide with total vehicles volume three time higher than 7 years ago and still strong positive expectations for the future.

According to data aggregated from the many local associations, including AVID, the Marketing Committee of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA),  in the 2015 total vehicles sales had been 324.775, up 20.4% from the previous record.

Toyota reported 125.025 sales (+18.4%) with market share at 38.5% well ahead of the second, Mitsubishi with 54.087 (+8.0%) that during the year has purchased the local plant to Ford, third in sales ranking with 25.372 (+24.7%).

Isuzu was fourth with a strong +59.7% (22.569 sales) outpacing Hyundai, fifth with 22.058 (-4.2%). Record sales reported by Honda at 19.315, Nissan at 11.420, Suzuki at 10.487 and Kia at 10.010.
