It is only hatchback (3/5 doors and wagon) because the twin on sedan version is called Jetta. Available with two electric versions, the e-Golf launched in early 2014, and the Golf GTE, the plug-in version launched in the 2015.

In third place, up 2 spots, the Honda Civic with 816.000 sales (+20.4%). Launched in the 1972, it is actually at the 10th generation (since 2016), available with 3/4/5 doors. The 2017 volume was boosted by the last generation distribution in all countries (over 140) including Europe, where the model is produced in UK (for hacth version) and Turkey (for the sedan).

World Best Selling Compact Cars 2016 ranking again led by the Toyota Corolla while the Toyota Prius joined the Top 10, first time ever. Volkswagen Golf was second while Hyundai Elantra was new on podium.

The largest car segment in the World had ever been the called “compact” or “C segment” (under the EU segmentation) and it was the largest in the 2016 as well, when global sales had been reported at 16.7 million units (+0.5%)., the highest level ever.

The global duel between Toyota and Volkswagen as brand is in place in this segment as well. Indeed, while the leader is Toyota Corolla, with data including both sedan and hatchback sales, the second model, the Volkswagen Golf, includes only sales for Hatch (5 doors and wagon) and not the sedan, sold under the nameplate “Jetta”. Adding Jetta sales to the Golf, Volkswagen would lead the rank.

However, Toyota is selling many different models in this segment a part the Corolla, to better fit with local consumer’s demand (and imagination…) including the Auris, for Europe, and Hybrid Prius, last year entered in the top 10, first time.

So, for the 2016 again, the best compact car sold in the World was the glorious the Toyota Corolla with 1.313.000 sales, down 1.9% from the 2015 level, still the all time record.

In second place the Volkswagen Golf with 1.002.000 sales (-4.9%), peanuts over the 1 million level for the second year in a row.

A new model advanced in the third step of the podium, the Hyundai Elantra, with its record sales of 780.000 units (+3.0%)

Fourth was the Ford Focus, down 1 spot, with 735.000 units (-11.5%) ahead of the Honda Civic, up 1 spot, with 668.000 (+18.7%) and the Volkswagen Jetta, leader in the sedan sub-segment with 611.000 sales (+8.6%)

In seventh place the Mazda3 with 463.000 (+1.1%) followed by the Chevrolet Cruze, down 3 spots, with 456.000 units (-18.7%), the Skoda Octavia with 441.000(+3.5%), and in 10th place the Toyota Prius with 384.000 (+38.8%).
