Medium-Term Market Trend

New Zealand’s car passenger sales in the past decade have shown signs of a healthy market, growing for 9 consecutive years. From 2010 to 2019 the market doubled, moving from 80,453 in 2010 to 160,878 sales by the end of 2019.

The arrival of the pandemic slowed down car passenger sales in New Zealand, falling 25.7% to 119,579 new registrations.

The pandemic wasn’t enough to stop the uptrend accumulated in the past decade, in fact, 2021 reported a 31.6% growth in new car registrations with 2022 continuing the uptrend and reaching 116,451 cumulative sales(+3.8%). Although the market grew in 2022, it did so at a slower pace. A combination of factors are behind the current industry struggle: the disruption in the global supply chain caused by a lack of raw materials, in particular for the production of microchips and the Governments push towards Evs.

Medium-Term Market Trend

Sales fell to 633,740 in 2015 and began to recover up to 863,556 in 2017. 2018 and 2019 both reported losses with the later falling 42.9% reaching the lowest of the past decade at 438,590.

Post-covid the Argentinian light vehicle market is showing signs of recovery with 2021 ending at 355,793 sales (+17.1%) and 2022 totaling 392,533 sales, a 6.5% growth from the prior year. The momentum gained in the second half of 2022 continues into 2023, with the first months of the year reporting strong growth.

Despite the great performance in the last few years, there are a few factors that  will put negative pressure on the market throughout 2023: the disruption in the global supply chain caused by a lack of raw materials, in particular for the production of microchips and the Governments push towards Evs. This last point isn’t as important now as it will be in the future, considering that currently only 0.45% of market share in South America belongs to BEVs.

Ugandan Vehicles market in 2022 totaled 1,601 sales, a 4.1% increase from the prior year. The growth in Q3 and Q4 was able to offset the loss in the first half of the year.

Market Trend and Outlook

Uganda’s car market in 2022 totaled 1,601 new registrations, a 4.1% increase from the previous year. The loss in volume reported in Q1 and Q2 was offset by the strong growth in the last two quarters of the year.

Brand-wise, this year the leader Toyota grew 4.9% in sales compared to the previous one, followed by Nissan in second with a 3.2% surge in auto registrations. Volkswagen maintained 3rd position rising 7.7% in volume this year.

Medium-Term Market Trend

In 2017, total vehicle sales were 2,193 (-8.9%) while in 2018 the market marginally recovered with 2,231 units sold (+2.1%).

The vehicle market hit a new all-time high in 2019 after a tough period, reaching a peak of 2,555 units sold (including HCVs) and soaring 14.5% from the previous year. Indeed, the market is still really limited, representing only a marginal quota on the import of vehicles, and there are no signs of Government actions to limit the import of exhaust and obsolete used-vehicles. Additionally, an improved economic environment is not enough to sustain private consumer demand, considering the very low pro capita income.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic sales in 2020 totaled 1,815, reporting a decline of 29% compared to the previous year.

In 2021 sales fell 15.3% to 1,538, while in 2022 the market was able to recover 4.1% in volume and accumulated 1,601 sales.
