World Best Selling MPV ranking in 2023: BYD Song is the market leader. GAC Aion jumps 6 spots into 2nd (+103.3%). Toyota Sienta up 107.0%.

The best-selling model in the first 10 months of 2023 is the BYD Song, maintaining 1st with 310,961 units sold (-10.1%).

In second place ranks the GAC Aion Y -up 6 spots- with 190,684 sales (+103.3%), ahead of the Chrysler Pacifica -up 8 spots- with 136,369 units sold (+51.3%).

The Toyota Sienna falls 2 spots into 4th with 131,652 units sold (+12.0%), ahead of the Kia Carnival -up 5 spots- with 128,036 sales (+41.7%), the Toyota Sienta -up 13 spots- at 116,330 (+107.0%) and the Maruti Eeco -down 3 spots- with 115,750 new registrations (+7.9%).

The Maruti Ertiga falls 5 spots into 8th, reporting 104,136 sales (-3.3%) followed by the Buick GL8 at 99,616 (+1.8%) and the Denza D9 -up 150 spots- closing the Top 10 with 97,657 units sold.

World Best Selling MPV ranking of 2022: BYD Song is the new market leader. GAC Aion Y reaches 6th place, while previous year’s leader drops in 5th place.

The new best-selling model of 2022 is the BYD Song, previously in second place, with 459,429 units sold this year (+128.7%).

In second place ranks the Maruti Ertiga -up 7 spots- with 133,814 sales (+17.0%), ahead of the Toyota Sienna – also up 7 spots- with 132,699 units sold (+27.0%).

The Maruti EECO rose 4 spots into 4th place with 125,074 units sold (+9.2%), ahead of previous year’s leader the Wuling Hongguang -down 4 spots- with 124,381 sales (-51.4%), the GAC Aion Y -up 36 spots- at 119,687 (+250.9%) and the Nissan Note -up 4 spots- with 114,646 new registrations (+19.5%).

In eight place ranks the Buick GL8 with 114,175 sales (-32.8%) followed by the Kia Carnival at 111,907 (-4.9%) and the Toyota Roomy closing the Top 10 with 109,236 units sold (-19.0%).

World Best Selling MPV ranking in 2021 final data is still dominated by the Wuling Hongguang. The Toyota Roomy reaches 5th place, while the Kia Carnival enters the leaderboard.

The best-selling model in 2021 is still the Chinese Wuling Hongguang with 256k units sold (6.1% market share). Produced since September 2010 by SAIC-GM-Wuling it is actually sold only in China.

In second place we have the Hyundai Staria with 178k sales (4.2% share), ahead of the Buick GL8 -down 1 spot- with 170k units sold (4% market share).

The Honda Odyssey fell 1 spot and ended up in 4th place with 154k units, ahead of the Toyota Roomy -up 3 spots- with 135k units sold, the Toyota Alphard -down 1 spot- with 131k units, and the Maruti EECO -down 1 spot- with 115k units sold.

In eight place we have the Maruti Ertiga – up 2 spots – with 114k sales followed by the Kia Carnival -up 3 spots- with 114k and finally, entering the leaderboard we have the Nissan Note with 96k units sold.

World Best Selling MPV ranking in 2020 final data is still dominated by the Wuling Hongguang. The Toyota Alphard skyrockets in 4th place, jumping 11 positions and the Toyota Roomy enters the leaderboard by jumping 11 spots.

The best-selling model in 2020 is still the Chinese Wuling Hongguang with 270.310 units sold (6.6% market share). Produced since September 2010 by SAIC-GM-Wuling it is actually sold just in China.

In second place the Buick GL8 -up 3 spots- with 156.879 sales (3.9% share), ahead of the Honda Odyssey -down 1  spot- with 149.684 units sold (3.7% market share).

The Toyota Alphard jumped 11 spots and ended up in 4th place with 125.328, ahead of the Kia Soul -down 2 spots- with 109.92 units sold, the Maruti EECO -up 3 spots- with 99.480 units, and the Toyota Sienta with 89.162 units sold.

In eight place we have the Toyota Roomy – up 11 spots – with 87.242 followed by the Chrysler Pacifica -up 3 spots- with 87.163 and finally, the Maruti Ertiga with 80.679 units sold, entering the top ten by jumping 8 spots.

World Best Selling MPV ranking in 2019 was dominated by the Wuling Hongguang despite being hit by a sharp sales’ drop (-21.3%). The Kia Soul reached the 2nd position, overtaking the Dodge Grand Caravan, which lost 19%.

The best-selling model in 2019 was again the Chinese Wuling Hongguang despite sharply decreasing from the previous year (-21.3%) with 374.878 units sold. Produced since September 2010 by SAIC-GM-Wuling it is actually sold just in China.

In second place the Kia Soul with 155.466 sales (-4.8%), outpacing the Dodge Grand Caravan – down 19% – with 150.754 units sold.

The Buick GL8 jumped in 4th place with 148.121 (+2.6%), ahead of the Nissan Note, with 135.165 (-12.7%), the Honda Odyssey with 133.282 (-8.5%) and the Toyota Sienta with 129.667 (+7.7%).

In eight place the Toyota Avanza – up 5 spots – with 121.646 (+1.2%) followed by the Maruti Eeco with 114.105 (+34.9%) and the Toyota Sienna with 107.260, entering the Top 10 despite losing 10.2%.

World Best Selling MPV ranking in the 2018 was dominated by the Chinese Wuling Hongguang despite losing 10.5%. However, the rest of the podium changed from the previous year thanks to the success of the Honda Odyssey, second, and the Dodge Gran Caravan, third.

Global Sales

In the 2018, the “Multi Purpose Vehicles” segment accounted 6 million vehicles sold, down 8.5% from the previous year. The top three markets for this segment are USA, China and Germany.

Global MPV sales by Brand

Toyota is the global leader within the MPV segment with 1.27 million units sold in the 2018 (-8.3%), followed by Honda with 504.369 (+5%) and Wuling with 487.635 (-10.2%).

In fourth place Kia with 350.454 sales (-0.3%), followed by Nissan – up 20.5% – with 304.144 units and Suzuki with 221.204 (-7.1%).

Global MPV sales by Manufacturer

The global leader in the MPV segment is Toyota Group with 1.47 million sales in 2018 (-9.3%), ahead of General Motors – down 10.2% – with 948.290 and Renault-Nissan Alliance with 651.821 (-11.4%).

In fourth place Honda Motor with 504.369 units sold (+5%), followed by F.C.A. with 371.758 (-2.6%) and Hyundai-Kia with 366.344 (-0.4%).

In second place the Honda Odissey with 190.549 sales (+6.5%),

In third place the Dodge Gran Caravan with 183.047 units (+5.3%) followed by the Toyota Innova with 174.346 (-4.4%),  the Kia Soul, with 160.081 (-3.6%) and the Nissan Note with 151.199 (-7%) and the Buick GL8 with 144.308 (-1.1%).

In eight place the BYD Song Max with 141.068 followed by the Volkswagen Touran with 132.329 (-8.8%) and in 10th place the Toyota Aqua with 127.132 (-3.8%).
