World Car Group Ranking in 2023 is dominated by Toyota (+4.7%) which maintains still a significant distance from the runner up Volkswagen (+9.1%). Ford overtakes Honda Motor in YTD sales.

This report is produced extracting the registrations figures from the Global Database owned by our team, which track registrations i 159 countries, all brands, all models.

Looking at cumulative data up to October 2023, the leadership is solid in the hands of Toyota Group (data for all OEMs does not includes HCV and Buss, so Hino is not included under Toyota) which sold 8.82 million vehicles (+4.7%), losing 6.8% Africa, gaining 6.1% in the Asia and 9.1% in Europe.

The second is Volkswagen Group with 7.15 million sales (+9.1%) growing sharply in America (+16.6%) and Europe (+20.3%).

Hyundai-Kia ranks in 3rd spot reporting 5.91 million sales and a 4.4% increase in sales. This growth was sustained by surges in America (+7.9%) and Asia (+6.3%).

In 4th spot the Renault Nissan Alliance accumulates 5.63 million sales (+5.1%). The struggle in Asia (-15.3%) and Africa (-8.8%) is compensated by growths in both Americas (+22.2%) and Europe (+18.0%).

Stellantis maintains 5th spot with 5.52 million sales (+5.5%). It lost substantial sales in Asia (-13.3%), while growth was reported in Europe (+12.5%).

Behind, General Motors with 5.05 million sales (+1.6%) followed by Ford with 3.31 million units sold (+4.6%).

Honda Motor ranks in 8th with 3.29 million new registrations (+1.5%), losing both in Europe (-11.5%) and Asia (-9.8%).

In 9th place Suzuki with 2.55 million sales is up 5.3% sustained mainly by a +5.5% in Asia.

In 10th place ranks BYD -up 3 spots- with 2.11 million sales (+56.8%). The Chinese Group did better than Tesla (14th with sales up 29.4%) and is now the World Leader among EVs specialists.

The best-selling model in the first 10 months of 2023 is the BYD Song, maintaining 1st with 310,961 units sold (-10.1%).

In second place ranks the GAC Aion Y -up 6 spots- with 190,684 sales (+103.3%), ahead of the Chrysler Pacifica -up 8 spots- with 136,369 units sold (+51.3%).

The Toyota Sienna falls 2 spots into 4th with 131,652 units sold (+12.0%), ahead of the Kia Carnival -up 5 spots- with 128,036 sales (+41.7%), the Toyota Sienta -up 13 spots- at 116,330 (+107.0%) and the Maruti Eeco -down 3 spots- with 115,750 new registrations (+7.9%).

The Maruti Ertiga falls 5 spots into 8th, reporting 104,136 sales (-3.3%) followed by the Buick GL8 at 99,616 (+1.8%) and the Denza D9 -up 150 spots- closing the Top 10 with 97,657 units sold.

World Best Selling SUV Ranking in 2023 sees the Tesla Model Y as new leader, surging 65.6% in sales. Audi Q5 (+19.1%), Honda Hr-V (+20.6%) and Kia Seltos (+10.7%) enter the top 10 for the first time.

The best-selling SUV in the first 10 months of 2023 becomes the Tesla Model Y, leading with 964,591 sales (+65.6%). 

The second best-selling SUV is previous year’s leader the Toyota RAV4, down 0.2% with 743,806 sales, followed by the Honda CR-V with 569,431 new registrations (+10.6%).

In fourth place ranks the Hyundai Tucson with 509,905 sales (+11.0%), followed by the Kia Sportage with 509,905 new registrations (+9.6%). In sixth place ranks the Volkswagen Tiguan with 414,395 sales (+12.1%), ahead of the Mazda CX-5 with 307,074 (-1.1%) and the Honda HR-V -up 8 spots- with 286,566 units sold (+21.1%).

The Kia Seltos rises 5 spots into 9th with 273,712 cumulative sales (+10.7%) and the Audi Q5  closes the Top 10 with 267,933 new registrations, an 17.0% increase from the prior year.

World Best Selling Coupe up to October 2023 the Dodge Charger (+4.0%) maintains leadership followed by the Ford Mustang (+7.9%). The Chevrolet Camaro rises 26.7% from the previous year.

Considering data from 2023 up to October, the Dodge Charger maintains the throne of the Global Coupe Segment, reporting 78,604 sales (+4.0%). Introduced in the US market in 1966, this model has been developed across seven generations, the last introduced in 2011, and has finally taken over its archenemy.

In 2nd spot the Ford Mustang reports 59,238 new registrations, with a 7.9% growth in sales. Manufactured since 1965, it is the most iconic vehicles produced by Ford, having created the “pony car” class of American muscle cars, affordable sporty coupe with long hoods and short rear decks. The 5th current generation, launched in 2014 is distributed in over 135 countries.

The Dodge Challenger follows in 3rd best selling with 41,631 sales, a 14.6% loss form the prior year.

The Porsche 911 follows in 4th with 37,138 units sold (+21.3%). 

In 5th place, ranks the Chevrolet Corvette with 30,917 units sold (-3.2%), followed by the Chevrolet Camaro -up 4 spots- with 28,693 sales (+26.7%), the Porsche Taycan at 28,382 (+10.8%) and the Mazda MX-5 with 28,344 sales (+21.3%).

Finally, in ninth place ranks the BMW i4 with 24,995 units sold (+74.6%) and the Volkswagen Arteon with 23,164 units sold (-4.4%).

The Global Auto Brands Ranking

Looking at cumulative data up to October 2023, the leader Toyota holds 10.9% market share with sales at 7.62 million (+3.4%), further widening the gap from second place. 

Furthermore, tracking the ranking of top-selling car brands in the World since 2010, we have always seen Toyota leading the scene. Indeed, the Japanese benefit from the strategy to have concentrated in a single brand the most powerful line-up in the World, and while other manufacturers have assembled different brands aiming to cover more customer segments, Toyota has just a little diversification in the one-brand strategy, with Lexus in the luxury segment and Daihatsu in the small, low-cost vehicles.

Volkswagen, in 2nd position, holds 5.9% market share, selling 4.12 million cars (+4.2%).

In 3rd ranks Ford with 3.20 million units sold (+5.3%), overtaking Hyundai which reported 3.17 million new auto registrations (+4.8%).

Honda secures 5th with 3.16 million sales (+0.5%), overtaking Nissan at 2.78 million (+6.7%)

Chevrolet ranks in 7th reporting 2.67 million sales (+7.9%), while Kia falls 1 spot into 8th with 2.56 million units sold (+3.6%), followed by BYD in 9th at 2.11 million sales (+56.8%).

Mercedes closes the top 10 with 1.92 million cumulative sales (+3.3%).

Worlds Largest Car Markets 2023. Global Markets up to October 2023 register a 6.9% growth, with China falling 1.8% and Mexico surging the most (+24.2%).

69,64 million Cars were sold world wide in 2023 up to October, a 6.9% increase in sales from 2022.

China remains the leading global market with 20.12 million sales, falling 1.8%. This huge market accounts for 28.9% of all global sales.

USA, in second position, registers 12.86 million new cars rising 12.5% and holding 18.5% of global market share.

In third position ranks Japan with 3.80 million units sold and  a +14.8% in sales (5.5% market share), followed by India which posted 3.73 million sales (+8.9%), Germany in 5th reports sales at 2.36 million (+13.4%), followed by Mexico with 2.16 million units sold (+24.2%).

UK follows closely with 1.85 million in sales (+16.4%), in front of France with 1.75 million in sales (+14.3%).

At the edge of the top 10 rankings, we find Brazil, with sales at  1.74 million (+11.4%) and finally Italy accumulating 1.44 million new registrations in 2023 (+19.4%).

In second place ranks the Ford Mustang, with 63,101 sales, a 13.0% decrease form the prior year. Manufactured since 1965, it is the most iconic vehicles produced by Ford, having created the “pony car” class of American muscle cars, affordable sporty coupe with long hoods and short rear decks. The 5th current generation, launched in 2014 is distributed in over 135 countries.

In third place we have the Dodge Challenger with 58,076 sales (+2.0), followed by the BYD Seal -up 176 spots- with 51,200 units sold (6.8% market share). 

In 5th place, we have the Chevrolet Corvette -up 1 spot- with 39,887 units sold (+12.0%), followed by the Porsche 911 -up 1 spots- with 35,309 sales (+1.6%), the Porsche Taycan -down 2 spots- at 31,855 (-16.5%) and the Volkswagen Arteon with 28,622 sales (-12.7%).

Finally, in ninth place we have the Toyota GT86 -up 17 spots- with 26,812 units sold (+256.4%) and the Chevrolet Camaro with 26,566 units sold (+11.4%).

World Best Selling SUV Ranking sees the Toyota RAV4 maintaining 1st position despite losing 13.7% this year. Tesla Model Y, up 88.7%, jumps into 2nd overtaking the Honda CR-V.

The best-selling SUV in 2022 remains the Toyota RAV4, leading with 868,398 sales (-13.7%). It’s the first Sport Utility Vehicles sold worldwide, launched in Japan and Europe in 1994.

The second best-selling SUV is the Tesla Model Y that with 759,579 sales (+88.7%) jumped 5 spots, overtaking the Honda CR-V with 591,293 new registrations (-18.8%).

In fourth place ranks the Hyundai Tucson with 549,918 sales (+0.4%), followed by the Kia Sportage -up 1 spot- with 466,408 new registrations (+15.5%). In sixth place -down 2 spots- ranks the Volkswagen Tiguan with 438,502 sales (-19.9%), ahead of the Mazda CX-5 with 351,846 (-6.7%) and the Toyota Highlander -down 3 spots- with 342,424 units sold (-16.5%).

The Mercedes GLC rises 5 spots into 9th with 321,414 cumulative sales (+5.6%) and the Nissan Qashqai  closes the Top 10 with 301,643 new registrations, an 11.5% decrease from the prior year.

The new best-selling model of 2022 is the BYD Song, previously in second place, with 459,429 units sold this year (+128.7%).

In second place ranks the Maruti Ertiga -up 7 spots- with 133,814 sales (+17.0%), ahead of the Toyota Sienna – also up 7 spots- with 132,699 units sold (+27.0%).

The Maruti EECO rose 4 spots into 4th place with 125,074 units sold (+9.2%), ahead of previous year’s leader the Wuling Hongguang -down 4 spots- with 124,381 sales (-51.4%), the GAC Aion Y -up 36 spots- at 119,687 (+250.9%) and the Nissan Note -up 4 spots- with 114,646 new registrations (+19.5%).

In eight place ranks the Buick GL8 with 114,175 sales (-32.8%) followed by the Kia Carnival at 111,907 (-4.9%) and the Toyota Roomy closing the Top 10 with 109,236 units sold (-19.0%).

World Car Group Ranking in 2022 is dominated by Toyota which excavated a wide gap over the rival Volkswagen Group. All Top OEMs are losing (apart from Suzuki) while Electric specialist are jumping ahead with BYD overtaking Tesla.

This report id produced extracting the registrations figures from the Global Database owned by our team, which track registrations i 159 countries, all brands, all models.

In 2022 global light vehicles sales (cars + LCVs) accumulated to 76.96 million with a moderate 4.1% decline from the previous year.

The leadership is solid in the hands of Toyota Group (data for all OEMs does not includes HCV and Buss, so Hino is not included under Toyota) which sold 10.0 million vehicles (-1.8%), losing over 60% in the C.I.S. area and 10.3% in North America.

The second is Volkswagen Group with 7.86 million sales (-7.2%) losing sharply in Europe (-10.7%), North America (-20.0), Latin America (-11.5), the UK (-12.1%). The Loss was mitigated by a 0.2% loss in the world’s largest area, Asia.

The third is Hyundai-Kia, with 6.66 million sales (-5.7%) due to losses in Asia (-1.1%), North America (-4.7%) and Europe (-14.9%). The Group reported a growth in sales only in Oceania (+7.7%).

In fourth place and down 1 spot we find the Renault Nissan Alliance  with sales at 6.32 million (-15.7%) . Sales are declining in all sub-regions, apart from in Africa (+6.0%) and in East Europe.

In fifth spot the French-Italian-American Group Stellantis with sales at 6.31 million (-8.6%). The group is struggling both in Europe (-11.9%) and North America (-10.7%) while growing rapidly in the ASEAN (+31.0%).

Behind, General Motors with 5.83 million sales (-7.8%) followed by Honda Motor with 3.70 million and the worse performance among the leaders (-20.3%).

Ford ranks in 8th with 3.64 million new registrations (-6.2%), losing in North America (-1.4%), Europe (-8.4%) and Asia (-15.4%).

In 9th place Suzuki with 2.87 million sales is up 4.7% thanks to the +7.9% reported in Asia countered by the heavy loss in Europe (-32.9%).

In 10th place ranks the first premium group, BMW with 2.33 million sales (-8.0%), losing in Asia and Europe.

The rising star is the Chinese BYD -up 8 spots- in 13th spot, specialized in electric vehicles with sales booming 156.9%. The Chinese brand did better than Tesla (15th with sales up 41.4%) and is now the World Leader among EVs specialists.
