World light vehicles sales aggregated by manufacturer group were dominated by three groups. In 2019 Volkswagen hit the record share of 12.2% while Toyota overtook the Renault-Nissan Alliance, holding respectively 11.4% and 10.9% of share. The marriage between PSA and FCA will create the 5th group, as they ended the year with 8.8% of aggregated market share.

During the last decade the automotive industry competitive scenario changed dramatically due to the success or defeats of the manufacturers on following the development of the market dynamics which challenge each player at 360 degrees, from the ability to design appropriately for each market until to delivering an appropriate customer relation in any side of the World.

In 2010 the global leader was the General Motors, which had led the World for decades, thanks to a huge brand portfolio. However, most of GM sales were unprofitable and it was a clay giant, not far from bankruptcy. In these decade GM have reduced the covered territories and the brands (selling Opel to PSA) accepting to lose market share from 12.5% (including Opel) in the 2010 to 9.6% in the 2018 and in 2019 it ended with 9.1%, fourth in the World.

While GM was unable to manage the brands’ portfolio despite a great coverage of the territory, the new global leader, Volkswagen Group has won not only covering the global territory quite well (just in ASEAN Volkswagen Group is not strong), but even managing the brand portfolio quite well. Starting from 10.9% of share in the 2010, the Group grew up at a record of 11.9% in 2018 and in 2019 reported 12.2% share.

In second place Toyota Group, which holds the smallest brand portfolio. The last decade record share was established in 2012 with 11.2%, but the 2019 performance was so outstanding to hit e new record of 11.4%, overtaking the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

Indeed, in third position we find the Renault-Nissan Alliance, which grew from 10.4% of share in 2010 to a record of 11.3% in the 2018, when Mitsubishi acquisition contributed substantially. In 2019 the Group ended at 10.9%.

The announced marriage between F.C.A. and P.S.A. will combine the current 8th and 9th larger manufacturers actually and should generate the fifth group at global level, with a 2019 market share at 8.8%.
