Market Trend and Outlook

The American vehicles market in October 2023 reported 1.2 million new registrations, the 15th consecutive monthly growth (+23.7%). YTD figures at 12.83  million are up 13.6% compared to the previous year.

Looking at specific models the Ford F-Series remains the best seller with a 21.1% increase in year-on-year volume, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado up 3.8%.

Medium-Term Market Trend

After the fall reported as consequence of 2008 economic crisis, when then market dropped from near 18 to 10 million annual volumes, since the 2010 the market recovered supported by a quite positive economic cycle.

Starting at 11.5 million in 2010, the American light vehicles market rose for 6 consecutive years, ending 2016 with a peak of 17.6 million sales. From 2017 to 2019 the market bounced around the low 17 million mark.

The arrival of the pandemic in 2020 made many manufacturers and distributors close down, causing a big problem in the automobile industry, with sales in the US falling 13.9% to 14.7 million by the end of the year.

After the issues caused by the pandemic the American light vehicle market started to show signs of recovery in 2021 with sales finishing at 15.3 million, 4.3% higher than the previous year. This recovery didn’t last long, in fact the market fell 8.9% to 13.65 million cumulative sales.

A combination of factors are behind the current industry struggles: the microchips and other components shortage, combined with skyrocketing raw material cost pushed up the new vehicles transaction prices (price effectively paid by the final customer) by over 10% in the last 12 months. In addition most demanded models are in short supply with waiting time tripled since 2020. Transition to electric vehicles is further pushing up the new vehicles average price as the gap between a combustion and electric car is still very significant.

USA Best Selling Cars ranking in 2022 reports growing Tesla success with the Model 3 jumping 24 spots into 6th. On top of the list, as usual there is Ford F-Series, while the best car passenger is the Toyota RAV4.

We are not sure if all “experts” which spent their time and influence against Mr Musk dream are still around or stopped sharing sentences on the future. Facts are that Tesla is near to gain the leadership of the US Auto Market, and is in the Top 10 both in China and in Europe.

The absolute leadership in the US market is still very far from Tesla, due to the American people’s love for Big Trucks. But looking at car passengers, Tesla model 3 is already the best sedan and the second car.

However, looking at the ranking from the top, of course the 2022 leader is – as in the last decades – the Ford F-Series with 653,957 sales (-9.9%), followed by the Chevrolet Silverado, with 520,936 (-1.7%) which gained one spot from the previous year.

In third place the Ram Pick-Up with 468,344 sales (-17.7%), followed by the Toyota RAV4 with 399,941 (-1.9%).

In 5th place the Toyota Camry with 295,201 sales (-5.9%) ahead of the Tesla Model 3 is 6th and up 24 spots with an impressive sales boom at 264,648 (+117.6%) and is definitively the star of the year.

GMC Sierra ranks in 7th with 241,521 (-3.0%), the Honda CR-V with 238,155 (-34.1%) and the Toyota Tacoma with 237,323 (-6.0%)

In 10th place the Tesla Model Y with 225,799 (+39.8%).

Looking back, another astonishing success ranks in 29th place and is the Ford Bronco with 117,057 sales (+234.2%).

USA’s car market in 2021 rises by 2% with 14.95 million sales, reporting a very strong first half, followed by a double-digit fall in the second part of the year. Toyota conquers the market throne, overtaking Ford.

Market Trend

The USA car market this year attempted to recover from the pandemic crash of 2020 and reported a very promising performance in the first half, followed by another double-digit fall.

Following the sharp 2008 crisis which created a collapse to the US vehicles market, with Chrysler group saved by the merge with Fiat and General Moors rescue by the government credit, in 2011 the market has taken a long recovery way and grew up from 10.5 million (2010) to the all-time new record, hit in 2016 with 17.5 million.

However, the change in the White House guest and the new protectionist policy, with initial economic boom due to the sharp tax cut, did not benefit the sector and in the last three years, the market has moderately lost, down to 17.23 million in 2017, at 17.34 million in 2018 while ending 2019 at 17.02 units sold.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic sales fell in  2020. In fact, sales have been 14,665,787, reporting a decline of 13.8% compared to 2019.

In 2021 the year started positively for the USA market, in fact, in Q1 3.97 million units have been sold, reporting a 13.2%, followed by an impressive 46.9% increase in sales in Q2 with 4,35 million units due to the incredibly low volumes in Q2 2020.

In Q3 sales started falling in double-digits again, losing 15.7% with 3.38 million units, and this negative trend was maintained in Q4 with 3.26 million sales (-22.2%).

Indeed, Full-Year sales for 2021 have been 14.95 million, reporting a 2% increase compared to 2019.

Jeep lost 3.3% sales, followed by Hyundai which reported the best performance by rising 17.2% and Kia which rose 2 spots and gained 15.6% sales. Closing the leaderboard we have Ram -down 2 spots- gaining 3.6% this year and finally Subaru -down 1 spot-, losing 2.2%.

The most sold vehicle this year remains the Ford F-series (-7.7%) with 726,003 units sold, followed by the Ram Pickup -up 1 spot-, which gained 4.3% registering 569,389 new sales this year. The Chevrolet Silverado (-8.4%) -down 1 spot- closes the podium and reports 529,765 new units sold.

Behind, a hard battle between two pickups was registered for the leadership among the car passengers, both achieving in the 2019 their record share. Eventually, the Toyota RAV4 prevailed with 2.6% ahead of the Honda CR-V projected at 2.3% by year-end.
