Europe best selling cars ranking in 2018 within 44 markets in the continent, from Portugal to Russia. The Volkswagen Golf is the best-selling car, followed by the Renault Clio and the Volkswagen Polo. Opel worsened, with the Corsa at the end of the Top10.

Economic Environment

Eurozone economy slowed notably in the third quarter, with growth recording the softest reading in four years. Notably, export growth contracted amid cooling global trade, while the industrial sector was also hurt as the automobile sector was disrupted by new emissions tests.

Available data for the fourth quarter points to mixed momentum. In October, industrial production rebounded and the unemployment rate was stable. However, sentiment slid in November and the composite PMI plunged to a four-year low in December.

A solid domestic economy should drive healthy growth next year. However, a less favorable external backdrop will weigh on the pace of expansion. The threats of rising global protectionism and turbulent internal politics are key risks to the Eurozone’s forecasts.

Best Sellers

As far as the 2018 best selling cars ranking within the entire continents (44 markets from Portugal to those in the East, like Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Moldova) year to date 2018 is dominated again – for the 44th year in a string – by the Volkswagen Golf, which has already a huge icon on all others anticipating the final yearly ranking.

Indeed, the Volkswagen Golf is the market leader with 502.752 (-8.8%) sales.

In second place the Renault Clio with 365.507 units (-0.7%). Launched in the 1990, actually is in the fourth generation, launched in 2012.

In third place the Volkswagen Polo with 313.449 (+5.3%). With more than 14 million units sold, it is one of the world’s most successful compact cars ever and actually the best seller. The sixth generation was launched in late 2017, with new exterior design, noticeably more spacious interior that has also been redesigned down to the last detail, new cockpit layout structured for the digital world, efficient TSI (petrol), TGI (natural gas) and TDI (diesel) engines as well as an array of assistance systems which previously was only familiar in larger Volkswagen cars.

In fourth place the Ford Fiesta with 274.455 (+4.9%) followed by the Volkswagen Tiguan with 258.491 (+4.8%), the Nissan Qashqai with 252.704 (-7%) and the Skoda Octavia with 240.644 (-1%).

In eight place the Peugeot 208 with 235.357 (-5.2%) followed by the Dacia Sandero with 225.260 (+3.7%) and in 10th place Opel Corsa with 222.952 (-7.7%).

Opel is at the end of the Top 10, first effect of new policy applied by P.S.A. after the brand acquisition. However, Fiat is without this status since time and the best Italian model in Europe is the Panda, only 21th.
