Australia Best Selling Cars ranking up to October 2023 is lead by the  Toyota Hilux (-8.4%) followed by the Ford Ranger (+30.6%). Tesla Model Y jumps 39 spots into 6th.

Considering data up to August 2023 the Australian Best-Selling Car is still the Toyota Hilux with 50,067 sales (-8.4%), followed by the Ford Ranger, with 49,288 new registrations (+30.6%).

In third place ranks the MG ZS -up 7 spots- with 25,689 sales (+57.0%), followed by the Toyota RAV4 -down 1 spot- at 24,986 units sold (-17.7%) and the Isuzu D-MAx -up 1 spot- with 24,677 new registrations (+16.4%). 

The Tesla Model Y rises 39 spots into 6th, reporting 24,267 sales, a 275.5% year-on-year growth.

Behind ranks the Mitsubishi Outlander in 7th with 20,000 sales (+28.0%) followed by the Mazda CX-5 with 19,404 (-17.3%), the Hyundai i30 with 18,013 units sold (-3.5%) and the Hyundai Tucson -up 3 spots- in 10th with 17,935 sales (+23.7%).

Australia Best Selling Cars in 2022 the leader is still the Toyota Hilux (+22.0%) maintaining a huge gap from second place. In the Top 50, Kia Sportage, Toyota Kluger and MG HS shine.

Toyota dominates the Australian four-wheeler market and is able to place four models within the top 10.

As in the previous years even in 2022, the market leader is still the pick-up Toyota Hilux with 64,391 sales and a strong increase from last year (+22.0%).

In second place the Ford Ranger keeps its place in second with 47,479 sales (-5.6%) and a safe margin over the third. The Toyota Rav4 sells 34,835 units (-2.6%). 

In fourth position the Mitsubishi Triton with 27,436 booming +42.7%.

Behind ranks the Mazda CX-5 with 27,062 (+8.4%) followed by the Toyota Corolla -down 2 spots- with 25,284 (-12.1%), the Isuzu D-Max -down 1 spot- with 24,336 (-3.1%) and the MG Zs with 22,266 (+21.9%).

In ninth position there is the Hyundai i30 with 21,166 units (-17.2%)  ahead of the Toyota Prado with 21,102 (-0.9%)

Further down the rankings the Kia Sportage in 12th place reports a remarkable performance (+136.4%). Other great growths are held by The Toyota Kluger (+34.8%) and the MG HS in 26th, up 60.3%

Looking at the 2021 ranking, the leader is still the Toyota Hilux with 52,801 units sold (5.3% of market share), followed by the Ford Ranger with 50,279 units (5% share). The Toyota Rav4 remains third with 3.6% market share and 35,751 units.

In fourth position we have the Toyota Corolla with 28,768 units sold (2.9% market share), ahead of the Hyundai i30 -up 1 spot- with 25,575 units sold (2.6% share) and the Isuzu D-Max which rose 6 spots with 2.5% share and 25,117 units sold. The Mazda CX-5 fell 2 spots and holds 2.5% share with 24,968 units.

In eight position there is the Toyota Prado with 21,299 units (2.1% share)  ahead of the Mitsubishi Triton -down 2 spots- with 1.9% share and 19,232 units sold.

The MG ZS reaches 10th place and holds 1.8% share with 18,423 units sold.

Looking at the 2020 ranking, the leader was again the Toyota Hilux with 43.208 units (5% of market share), followed by the Ford Ranger with 39.540 units (4.6% share). The Toyota Rav4 -up 5 spots- came third with 4.3% market share and 37.030 units.

In fourth position, the Toyota Corolla -down 1 spot- with 25.921 units sold (3% market share), ahead of the Mazda CX-5 -up 1 spot- with 21.601 units sold (2.5% share) and the Hyundai i30 which lost two ranking spots with 2.4% share and 20.518 units sold. The Mitsubishi Triton fell in seventh place with 2.2% share and 18.701 units.

In eight position, the Kia Cerato -up 1 spot- with 17.614 units (2% share)  ahead of the Toyota Prado which jumped 3 spots with 1.9% share and 16.813 units sold.

The Hyundai Tucson entered the leaderboard by overtaking the Mazda 3 and jumping 3 spots. It holds 1.8% share with 15.359 units sold.

Australia Best selling cars in 2019 confirmed the leadership of the two pick ups made by Toyota and Ford, while the growing availability of the last generation allowed to the Toyota Corolla to take back a place in the podium. The Mazda3 slipped down in 7th position.

Australian best selling car ranking, in 2019 did not show many surprises towards the usual ranking, with the market dominated by pick-ups and sedan, although we must highlight the Mazda3’s sharp drop.

Looking at the 2019 ranking, the leader was again the Toyota Hilux with 4.6% of market share, followed by the Ford Ranger – which has grown by over 2 points of share since 2010 – with 3.9% and the Toyota Corolla, which finally benefited from the new generation availability and is back on podium with 2.9% share.

In fourth position, the Hyundai i30, up one spot from the previous year, with 2.7% of share, ahead of the Mitsubishi Triton at 2.5% and Mazda3, which after reaching 4.3% in 2011 has steadily decline, ending the 2019 at 2.4%.

In fifth place the Hyundai I30 with 16.628 units (-3.1%) ahead of the Mazda CX-5 with 16.116 (+0.2%) and the Mitsubishi Triton with 14.281 sales (-6.2%).

Fast-growing cars were the Kia Cerato, the Mitsubishi Outlander and the Subaru Forester.

In the 2018 the Australian vehicles market is moderately negative, despite a quite positive start. Indeed, having ended the Q1 with 291.538 sales (+4.4%) and the Q2 with 316.605 (-1.1%), the Q3 reported 275.492 sales (-4.9%). October opened the Q4 with 90.718 (-5.3%), while in November sales were at 93.860 (-10.5%). Now  the market has been in decline for 8 consecutive months, a negative streak unseen in 4 years.

The Year to Date figures are at 1.065.592 (-1.9%) with full year projection at 1.166.826 units

Looking at the ranking of best 100 selling cars, the year to date leader is again the Toyota Hilux with 47.835 sales (+10.9%) followed by the Ford Ranger with 38.776 units (-1.3%) and the best passenger’s car the Toyota Corolla with 33.009 units (-4.9%).

In fourth place the Mazda3 with 28.780 (-3.7%) followed by the Hyundai i30 with 26.416 (-3.3%), the Mazda CX-5, best SUV in the market, with 24.183 units (+2.0%) and the Mitsubishi Triton with 22.896 sales (+9.2%)

In eight place the Toyota RAV4, up 3 spots, with 20.436 units (+6.1%) ahead of the Nissan X-Trail, up 7 spots with 19.531 (+13.4%) and in 10th place  the Volkswagen Golf with 18.689 units (+7.7%)

Mazda Global Performance 2017 was positive thanks to the success in CIS area and in Asia, while sales declined in Magreb, GCC, Levant and Europe. The best-selling model was again the CX-5 followed by the Mazda3.

Following the shy performance scored in the period 2010-2016, in the 2017 Mazda has not gained momentum improving below the industry with 1.584.000 global sales, up a mere 2.9%.

At regional level the best increase had been scored in the CIS area with sales up 19.9% and in Asia (including China, Japan and Korea) (+10.1%). Negative performance had been reported in the Gulf Cooperation Council region (-9.6%), Levant (-7.1%) and in the European Community (-2.1%).

At model wise, the best model was the CX-5 with 410.000 sales followed by the Mazda3 with 396.000 and the Mazda6 with 160.000.

Mazda Global Performance Report

In the period 2010-2016 Mazda global sales had been disappointing, improving for only 231.00 units, from 1.30 million in the 2010 to 1.53 million in the 2016, performing a Compound annual growth rate  (C.A.G.R) of 2.9%, a pace lower than the average despite a powerful line up with a style accepted in all the World as one of the best in absolute.

In this period, Mazda gained four spots in the global car brand ranking advancing in 14th place from the 18th.

Sales split at regional level confirmed in the 2017 the supremacy of the Asia counting the 42.8% of total sales (it was 45.3% in the 2010). However, sales in America are counting 30.3% (from 31.2%), while European sales are the 17.1% of the total (from 14.8%). Very relevant the Mazda performance in Oceania, actually counting 8.4% (from 7.6%).

In our report we figure out Mazda sales in 111 different countries, with forecast up to the 2022.

On top of all, in the 2016 there is USA with 19.4% of global sales share (from 17.6% in the 2010), ahead of China with 17.3% (from 18.9%), Japan with 13.1% (from 17.1%), Australia with 7.7% and Canada with 4.5%.

The traditional weakness in the domestic Japanese market is still penalized the brand not yet able to evolve the national brand positioning from cheap, second choise to sport near premium alternative.

Australian vehicles market continues its expansion, moderate, by grade, but endless. In the last five years annual car passenger’s sales grew from 1.072.000 in 2012 up over 100k in the last year, with a steady positive trend. Indeed, according to data released by the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructures, in the 2017 the total vehicles industry scored again the All Time Record, the third in a row, with a moderate gain over the previous year, Indeed final sales have been 1.189.138.

Looking at the ranking of best 100 selling cars, the annual leader was again the Toyota Hilux with 47.093 sales (+11.9%) followed by the Ford Ranger with 42.728 units (+15.7%), the Toyota Corolla with 37.353 (-7.9%), the Mazda3 with 32.690 (-9.5%) and the Hyundai i30, fifth with 28.780  (-23.8%).

Behind, the Mazda CX-5 up 2 spots, with 25.831 units (+5.2%) followed by the Hyundai Tucson, up 4 spots, with 23.828 (+18.4%), the Holden Commodore with 23.676 units (-8.4%), the Toyota Camry with 23.620 sales (-10.8%) and in 10th place the Mitsubishi Triton with 23.605 sales (+7.4%).

Since years the leadership in the Australian vehicles market has been a duel between the Toyota Corolla, usually the first, and its rival, the Mazda3. This was the top of the list last year while the 2016 has presented a great news, with a new leader coming from Korea, the Hyundai i30, able to fight vis-a-vis with the other two compact cars.

However, thanks to a year-end rush, the 2016 leader had been a pick up, the Toyota Hilux, up 2 spots from the previous year, first with 42.104 sales (+19%), almost 2k more than the Toyota Corolla, second with 40.330 (-1.1%) and over 5k on the third, the Hyundai i30, with 37.772 units (+16.9%).

In fourth place the Ford Ranger,  with 36.954 sales (+26.6%) confirming a roaring year for the pick up segment, followed by the Mazda3 with 36.107 sales (-6.6%), the Toyota Camry with 26.485 (-4.2%), the Holden Commodore with 25.860 units (-6.9%), the Mazda CX-5 with 24.564 (-2.3%), the Mitsubishi Triton with 21.987 sales (-13.2%) and in 10th place the Volkswagen Golf with 20.367 sales (-10.1%).

Looking behind, it was remarkable the score of the last generation of the new Hyundai Tucson, landed in 11th place with 20.132 sales.

Australia Best selling cars 2015 ranking led by Toyota Corolla, Mazda3 and Toyota Hilux. Subaru Outback was the fastest growing model inside top 100 while Mazda CX3 was the best new model of the year.

For the second year, the Toyota Corolla was the best-selling vehicles sold in Australia with 42.073 units (-3.8%) ahead of the historical rival, the Mazda3, this year a little penalized by cannibalized sales from the new CX3, with 38.644 units (-10.8%).

The third step of the podium is taken by the best pick up, the Toyota Hilux with 35.161 sales (-7.8%) with sales recently corroborated by the launch of the new generation.

The fourth, the Hyundai i30 with 32.306 units (+2.5%) ahead of the Ford Ranger (29.185 sales, +9.6%), the Holden Commodore (27.770, -8.1%), the Toyota Camry (27.654, +25.4%),  the Mitsubishi Triton (25.338, +4.5%), the Mazda CX-5 (25.136, +16.9%) and in 10th place the Volkswagen Golf (22.662, +15.9%). So, just little changes within the Top 10 with all models confirmed from the previous year.

Looking behind, it was remarkable the score of the last generation of the Nissan X-Trail, which jumped in 13th place from 26th with 17.971 sales (+43.0%), the Subaru Outback (28th with 10.927, +344%), the Nissan Qasqhai (34th with 10.556,+165%) and the Jeep Cherokee (59th with 6.156, +54%).

As far as the new models, the best was the Mazda CX-3 in 25th with 12.666 units, followed by the Honda HR-V in 31st with 10.899.
