Market  Trend

The Greek car market has been harshly hit in 2020 by the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic, which has impacted sales significantly.

The market was recovering after the sharp fall reported during the harsh 2008-2010 financial crisis and, since 2012, the car passenger’s segment improved substantially. In 2018, the market grew from 58.480 in 2012 to 103.436, and in 2019 signed the 7th consecutive year of growth. Indeed, Total sales in 2019 have been 114.110, growing in double-digits (+10.3%).

After starting the year in a positive trend (+6.2%), the market quickly collapsed in March as the virus struck. In fact, in March the Greek Government introduced stricter regulations, starting from March 10 with national school closures in affected areas, followed by retail closures on March 16, and eventually a national lockdown from March 23.

The sharpest drop in sales this year was in April when sales declined by 80.2%. In the following months, the recovery has been slower than most European countries, with growth in the second half of the year reported only in September (+20.5%) and November (+2.4%).

Indeed, Full-Year sales for 2020 have been 80.906, reporting a decline of 29.1% compared to 2019.
