Italian light vehicles market in 2016 recovers a place within the Top 10 Global markets, growing again over 2 million units. The car passengers sales at 1.82 million, were up 16%.

Market Outlook

The latest monthly indicators suggest that the economy maintained a slow but broadly steady pace of growth in Q4 after it had accelerated slightly in Q3, mainly on the back of stronger fixed investment, which offset a more negative contribution from the external sector. In the political arena, on 4 December, Italians voted No in the constitutional referendum, prompting Matteo Renzi to resign as prime minister.

Supported by fiscal incentives to vehicles purchased for business, the domestic new car passenger’s sector reported a brilliant year with a robust gain over the already positive 2015. In December the sales improved 13.7% with 124.433 registrations scoring the 25th year on year growth in a string.

The full year was the best since 2010 with 1.826.881 sales (+16.0%). Adding the sales of light commercial vehicles of 185.000 units (preliminary data) the whole light vehicles market raised over 2 million units again, first time since 2010, a significant recovery from the low peak hit in 2013 at 1.4 million.

Thanks to this outstanding trend, the Italian light vehicles market gained 3 spots in the global ranking, outpacing Korea, Canada and Brazil recovering its traditional rule within the Top 10.

Competitive Arena

Almost all brands are participating to the sales festival. However the year was almost positive for Renault, Mercedes, BMW, Jeep, Mazda, Honda and Lexus while the crown of the best performer was by far taken by Jaguar, up 197% at 4.912 sales.

Less positive performance were reported for Toyota, Opel, Volvo, Seat with he worse ticket, the only one down, shown by Nissan, down 6.7%.

At model wise, Fiat Panda was the leader for the 5th year in a row with 147.283 sales (+16.5%) and the domestic performance pushed the model up the podium in the global “city-cars” ranking (see the dedicated article).

Second was the Lancia Ypsilon, surprisingly gaining one spot despite the age, with 65.663 units (+17.6%), while third was the Fiat 500L with 54.578 sales (+9.3%).

Best imported models and up 2 spots the Renault Clio with 49.798 units.

Italian Auto Sales up 15% in the 2015 following 19th months of consecutive growth. Fiat defended the over 20% market share ahead of Volkswagen and Ford, while Jeep was the star of the year, not only thanks to Renegade.

Economic Outlook

Italy’s economy expanded 0.2% over the previous quarter in seasonally- and working-day adjusted terms in Q3. The reading, which marked the softest rise since Q4 2014, came on the back of a deterioration of the external sector’s contribution. However, latest indicators paint a positive picture of the economy at the start of Q4.

Indeed, in November, the PMI reached a four-month high and both business and consumer confidence reached all-time highs. Meanwhile, the government’s bailout of four Italian banks at the end of November resulted in significant losses for around 130,000 shareholders and 10,500 bondholders.

The resulting outrage prompted the government to set up a fund to support those who lost money in the restructuring operation. The fund is expected to be worth around EUR 100 million, which would cover about a third of the savers’ losses.

Market Outlook

Ending the year with a new sparkling performance scored in December, the Italian car passenger’s market reported an almost positive 2015 marking a recovery well ahead of the general economic performance scored by the country, still one of the slower in the European Community.

According to data released by the UNRAE, the Italian Association of Cars Importers, in December new cars sales had been 110.582, up 20.9% posting the 19th year-on-year increase in a row.

Full Year 2015 had been 1.583.596, up 15.7% from the previous year, the best out of last four years.

Competitive Arena

In December Fiat Auto has sold 23.072 cars (+34.8%) launching the new Stilo, a C sedan version in theory a car with no demand in this country. In the full year 2015 Fiat sold 324.026 units (+16.6%) with 20.5% of market share.

Volkswagen was second with December sales at 8.121 (+9.9%) and annual sales at 119.035 (+7.3%). In third for December Renault with 8.007 (+33.3%), while the French make was fourth in the full year with 96.443 units.

Ford in December sold 7.008 (+26.0%) ending the year in third place with 110.952 units (+19.2%).

The 2015 will be memorable for Jeep able to increase sales by 163.9% not only thanks to the Renegade success.

As far as performance by group, FCA ended the year on top of the list with 28.2% of market share ahead of Volkswagen with 13.3% and Renault-Nissan with 12.6%. However, the French-Japanese alliance in the fourth quarter was ahead of the German Group. anticipating the battle for the next year.

As far as the best-selling models, in December Fiat Panda was the leader with 8.878 units, up 21.4%, followed by the Lancia Ypsilon with 4.202 (+24.0%) and the new Fiat 500X with 3.832.

Car Market in Italy up in double digit after 5 years fueled by a mix of positive indicators. However the market level stands at lowest in decades with wide space for recovery. In January Ford, Renault and Opel shine.

In January 2015 according to data released by UNRAE, the Italian Association of Cars Importers, total new Car Passengers sold in Italy have been 132.643, up 11.1% compared with the correspondent month last year.

A double-digit growth was not seen in this market since March of 2010 and is encouraging for the rest of the year.  The already positive expectations for the Italian market (projected up 7% this year) have been recently reinforced by macro-economic indicator.

Stability on vehicles prices, drop of fuel cost and the new political stability in the country government under the strong Renzi leadership have reduced the consumer’s hesitations on substituting their cars.

This quarter the country will come out from the recession while the already strong exports will be boosted by huge cash injected in the system by BCE and by Euro depreciation.

Despite the positive launch of new 500X, Fiat has lost 5.2% of sales compared with January 2014 with 26.916 sales.

Volkswagen has lost as well, but only 0.7%, with 9.816 sales, while Ford in third fast started with +18.8%.

Renault and Opel, 4th and 5th, boomed sales as well

The split of DS brand out of Citroen was not avoiding a sharp decline for the French carmakers, while Jeep kept the rule of fastest growing brand ranking in 17th place with 2.555 units (+388%)

Others strong performances were posted by Dacia (11th with 4.502 sales, +28.8%) and Smart (19th with 2.201 sales, +31.8%).

As far as the car group’s performance and ranking, the leader was FCA with 28.2% market share, ahead of Volkswagen Group with 13.6% and Renault-Nissan with 13.4%.

As far as best-selling models ranking, the Fiat Panda was the leader with 9.441 sales (+12.6%) followed by Fiat Punto with 5.147 (-11.1%) and Lancia Ypsilon with 4.950 (-4.7%).

The new 500X was 21st with 1.415 units well behind the Jeep Renegade – produced in the same plant in South Italy – that was 15th with 1.947 units. Unfortunately for Fiat, the 500L collapsed 74.1% at 1.175 units.

The Range Rover Evoque lifts its Italian ranking record to 25th place.
