Looking at cumulative data up to October 2023 brand-wise, BMW maintains 1st position with 42,661 sales (+37.3%), followed by Volkswagen with 39,118 units sold (+40.7%).

In third place ranks Mercedes with 30,514 sales (+22.3%) ahead of Audi with 29,573 registrations (+35.2%), Peugeot at 26,550 (+5.5%), Renault with 22,034 (+33.9%) and Toyota with 20,316 registrations (+10.8%).

Volvo rises 5 spots into 8th with 17,984 (+66.0%) followed by Dacia -up 1 spot- with 17,835 (+35.6%) and in 10th place by Kia with 16,386 (+22.3%).

The car passenger’s market in Belgium is a mature market, with high share taken by premium brands, and in the decade before covid era has been stable, oscillating around half million annual sales.

The American vehicles market in October 2023 reported 1.2 million new registrations, the 15th consecutive monthly growth (+23.7%). YTD figures at 12.83  million are up 13.6% compared to the previous year.

Looking at cumulative data up to October 2023 brand-wise, Ford gains leadership with 1.58 million sales (+8.9%), followed by Toyota with 1.55 million new registrations (+9.1%) and Chevrolet in 3rd with 1.44 million units sold (+16.1%).

Honda maintains 4th position with 951,134 sales (+31.0%), in front of Nissan in 5th with 709,983 sales (+25.8%), Kia at 663,855 (+19.5%), Hyundai with 651,263 sales (+12.0%) and Tesla in 8th with 545,791 new registrations (+23.3%).

Jeep falls 4 spots into 9th with 537,112 sales (-8.8%) and Subaru closes the top 10 with 520,992 units sold (+15.9%).

Looking at specific models the Ford F-Series remains the best seller with a 21.1% increase in year-on-year volume, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado up 3.8%.

Medium-Term Market Trend

After the fall reported as consequence of 2008 economic crisis, when then market dropped from near 18 to 10 million annual volumes, since the 2010 the market recovered supported by a quite positive economic cycle.

Starting at 11.5 million in 2010, the American light vehicles market rose for 6 consecutive years, ending 2016 with a peak of 17.6 million sales. From 2017 to 2019 the market bounced around the low 17 million mark.

The arrival of the pandemic in 2020 made many manufacturers and distributors close down, causing a big problem in the automobile industry, with sales in the US falling 13.9% to 14.7 million by the end of the year.

After the issues caused by the pandemic the American light vehicle market started to show signs of recovery in 2021 with sales finishing at 15.3 million, 4.3% higher than the previous year. This recovery didn’t last long, in fact the market fell 8.9% to 13.65 million cumulative sales.

A combination of factors are behind the current industry struggles: the microchips and other components shortage, combined with skyrocketing raw material cost pushed up the new vehicles transaction prices (price effectively paid by the final customer) by over 10% in the last 12 months. In addition most demanded models are in short supply with waiting time tripled since 2020. Transition to electric vehicles is further pushing up the new vehicles average price as the gap between a combustion and electric car is still very significant.

Market Trend and Outlook

After having slowed down significantly in the second half of 2022 and in the first quarter of 2023, on the back of supply bottlenecks and higher energy and commodity prices, French GDP growth accelerated to 0.5% in the second quarter of the year. This was significantly more than previously expected (0.1%). The rebound was driven by net exports, while domestic demand remained sluggish. The European Commission states: “GDP is forecast to grow moderately over the rest of the forecast horizon, as domestic demand starts to recover”.

The French Auto Market on the other hand still maintaining strong momentum, with October 2023 growing for the 15th consecutive month, reporting 152,472 new sales and a double digit growth (+22.2%). YTD figures at 1.44 million are up 16.3% from the previous year.

Looking at cumulative data up to October 2023, brand-wise Renault rises 1 spot into 1st with 230,454 sales (+19.0%), followed by Peugeot with 205,769 (+0.5%), Dacia with 130,715 (+24.1%) and Citroen  with 108,381 registrations (-1.0%).

Volkswagen with 95,123 (+25.8%) maintains 5th place, followed by Toyota with 85,168 new registrations (+8.4%), in front of BMW at 44,593 sales (+27.9%) and Tesla at 43,966 registrations (+143.8%).

Ford falls into 9th with 42,169 units sold (+9.2%) and Hyundai closing the top 10 with 40,859 sales (+4.3%).

Looking at specific models the Renault Clio becomes the new best selling car with a 54.6% year-on-year increase in sales. The Dacia Sandero follows in second with a 10.5% rise in volume.

Medium-Term Market Trend

In the last decade the French market has had many ups and down. From 2010 to 2013 the French vehicle-market fell year after year starting from 2.3 million sales in 2010 and reaching the lowest point in 2013 with 1.8 million sales. Following this period the French market began a 6 year growth bringing sales nearly back to previous levels in 2019 (2.2 millions sales).

With the arrival of the pandemic in 2020, causing dealers and manufacturing plants to close down, the French auto-market took a substantial hit, losing 23.7%. This brought sales to an all time low, with  almost 1.7 million registrations.

Post-Covid, sales stayed at 1.7 million in 2021 and in 2022 fell 7.8% to 1.53 million. Lower demand was consequential to the current European sentiment that is pushing more towards EVs, a substantially more expensive alternative for French consumers. This will continue to slow sales going into 2023.

Another factor that will put negative pressure on demand in 2023 is the disruption in the global supply chain caused by a lack of raw materials for microchips. This has led manufacturers to increase prices and waiting times.

In 2018 improved for the second consecutive year, ending with sales up 37.8% at 5,231 units.

In 2019, the market started improving at an outstanding pace. Indeed, the Full-year ended with registrations at 8,483, booming 62.2%.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic sales fell in  2020. In fact, 5,276 units have been sold, reporting a decline of 37.8% compared to 2019.

The collapse wasn’t due to structural problems in the market, in fact, it boomed 61.2% in 2021, reporting 8,507 new yearly sales. The market stabilized in 2022 with sales dropping merely 2.3% totaling 8,274 light vehicle registrations.

On top of the list there is a new leader, the Nissan Versa with 54,724 sales (+55.8%). 2023 so far has been a great success for the Japanese manufacturer that also landed the Nissan NP300 in second spot with 46,727 units sold (+65.8%).

In third place ranks the Chevrolet Aveo with 3.8% market share and 37,064 sales (+31.4%), in front of the Kia Rio with 36,498 sales (-4.5%). 

The Nissan March ranks in 5th with 22,545 new units sold (-9.0%), followed by the MG 5 -up 2 spots- with 22,190 new registrations (+42.8%), the Nissan Sentra -up 3 spots- at 20,265 sales (+44.3%) and the Mazda3 with 18,895 units sold (+114.5%).

The Mazda2 jumps 33 spots into 9th with the best performance in the top 10 and 15,740 new sales (+176.1%) and the Renault Kwid closes the top 10 rising 10 spots with 14,571 units sold (+47.4%).

The following models have shown outstanding performances lower down the ranking: the Chevrolet S10 in 14th place and the Ram 700 in 24th.
