Market Trend and Outlook

Despite reaching a new all-time high in 2022, the Chilean Vehicle Market in October 2023 falls for the 15th month in a row, with 24,911 new registrations (-12.7%). YTD figures at 259,727 are down 27.9% from the previous year.

Looking at cumulative data up to October 2023 brand-wise, Toyota becomes the new best seller with 22,008 (-20.7%), followed by Chevrolet at 17,665 (-45.5%) in front of Hyundai at 17,065 (-14.3%) and Kia -up 4 spots- with 14,870 sales (-11.8%).

Peugeot rises 2 spots in 5th position with 14,634 sales (-14.8%), followed by Suzuki at 14,325 sales (-23.2%), Nissan at 12,666 (-2.2%) and Ford -up 6 spots- with 10,707 new registrations (-3.3%)

MG falls 3 spots into 9th position with 9,695 sales (-45.8%), followed by Mitsubishi -up 1 spot- closing the top 10 with 9,056 new registrations (-33.7%).

Looking at specific models the Toyota Hilux is the best seller with a 5.5% year-on-year growth in sales, followed by the Mitsubishi L200 down 43.6%.

Medium-Term Market Trend

In the last decade the Chilean vehicles market has had many ups and downs. From 2011 to 2015 the market fluctuated in the low 200k range. First rising to a maximum of 263,146 in 2013 to then fall down to a minimum of 211,810 in 2015. By the end of 2016 the vehicles market in Chile had already gained 9.0% compared to the previous year, with 2017 following suit growing 52.5% and 2018 reporting a peak of 372,646 sales. 2019 marked the end of this 3 year uptrend, with sales reaching 369,864 but the end of the year.

The arrival of the pandemic in 2020 caused the market to drop 29.9% back down to 259,299.

It is clear that the issues faced during the pandemic weren’t due to structural problems in the industry, in fact, in 2021 the market reported an amazing growth, gaining 60.3% up to an all time high of 415,612 sales. The positive momentum continued into 2022, that totaled 425,856 new registrations, a 2.5% growth from the prior year. Despite the new-all time high, the second half of the 2022 strongly underperformed, with the last 5 months of the year posting losses.

A combination of factors are behind the current industry struggle: the disruption in the global supply chain caused by a lack of raw materials, in particular for the production of microchips and Governments push towards Evs, an expensive alternative for low income consumers. At the moment affects from this last point are very mild, due to the low adoption of BEVs in South American countries (0.45% of total market share in South America).

Brazilian Vehicles Market in October 2023 grows for the 5th month after losing 4.8% in May, reporting 209,669 new sales (+22.7%). YTD figures at 1.74 million are up 11.6% from 2022. Volkswagen enters podium rising 31.8%.

Market Trend and Outlook

Brazil’s economy has been surprisingly resilient this year. Deloitte states: “Inflation-adjusted wages continue to grow at a relatively rapid clip as consumer price growth slowed. More recently, the labor market has tightened, and consumer confidence has soared. As a result, consumer spending is growing at a respectable rate. Pushing inflation lower will be more challenging from here. A lack of improvement on the inflation front will likely restrain consumer spending as real wage growth and interest-rate cuts slow.”

This growth in consumer spending has pushed the Brazilian Vehicles Market higher and higher, with sales in October 2023 increasing for the 5th month in a row and new registrations reaching 209,669 (+22.7%). YTD figures at 1.74 million are up 11.6% from the previous year.

Looking at cumulative data up to October 2023 brand-wise, Fiat reports the most sales at 384,467 (+12.0%), followed by Volkswagen -up 1 spot- at 271,322 (+3.18%) and Chevrolet -down 1 spot- with 268,596 sales (+16.1%).

In 4th ranks Toyota with 157,179 sales (+2.8%), followed by Hyundai at 144,378 (-6.8%), Jeep with 106,709 (-3.2%), Renault with 99,222 (-1.8%), Honda with 59,844 (+32.6%) and Nissan with 59,173 sales (+32.7%).

Peugeot maintains 10th spot, reporting 28,162 new vehicle registrations (-18.5%).

Looking at specific models the Fiat Strada maintains leadership as the best selling car, despite growing just 4.8% in year-on-year volume. The Volkswagen Polo follows in second, up 58 spots in the rankings.

Medium-Term Market Trend

The Brazilian vehicles market has had a few ups and downs in the past decade, with 2012 registering the highest levels for the following years. Previously, starting in 2010, the market rose for two consecutive years reaching 3.6 million sales in 2012. In 2013 the Brazilian market began a 4 year negative trend falling a maximum of 25.6% in 2015 and reaching 2 million sales in 2016. Luckily from 2017 to 2019 sales grew,  reaching 2.7 million sales.

In 2020 The COVID-19 pandemic has caused severe human suffering and triggered a deep recession in Brazil. The demand for consumer’s goods declined and light vehicles sales fell below the 2 million mark, first time in the decade.

Although the economy recovered in 2021 (GDP +5.0%) the basic trend was still weak. In fact, 2022 slowed down 0.9% with inflation rates jumping up and the demand remaining weak.

Projections for 2023 are not looking good due to the continuous price increases in parallel with the adoption of more safety rules and the shift towards electrification. This being said the overall trend in the first months of 2023 has been positive and the momentum gained in the last months of 2022 is continuing into the this year.

Medium-Term Market Trend

The Argentinian light vehicle market had many ups and downs in the last decade, rising to 917,777 sales in 2013 and collapsing 25.4% in the following year to 684,459 new registrations. Sales fell to 633,740 in 2015 and began to recover up to 863,556 in 2017. 2018 and 2019 both reported losses with the later falling 42.9% reaching the lowest of the past decade at 438,590.

The arrival of the pandemic in 2020 worsened the situation causing the market to fall another 30.7% to 303,793.

Post-covid the Argentinian light vehicle market is showing signs of recovery with 2021 ending at 355,793 sales (+17.1%) and 2022 totaling 392,533 sales, a 6.5% growth from the prior year. The momentum gained in the second half of 2022 continues into 2023, with the first months of the year reporting strong growth.

Despite the great performance in the last few years, there are a few factors that  will put negative pressure on the market throughout 2023: the disruption in the global supply chain caused by a lack of raw materials, in particular for the production of microchips and the Governments push towards Evs. This last point isn’t as important now as it will be in the future, considering that currently only 0.45% of market share in South America belongs to BEVs.

YTD figures at 134,500 are down 31.2% from the previous year.

Colombia’s vehicle market in September 2023 falls for the 12th consecutive month, reporting 15,611 new sales (-34.7%). YTD figures at 134,500 are down 31.2% from the previous year.

Market Trend and Outlook

The Colombian economy, registered as the 4th largest in Latin America, has experienced a strong  growth in the last decade. Despite GDP strongly rising at 7.3 percent in 2022, the economy overheated with activity above the potential, an accelerated inflation, and a high current account deficit. As the unwinding of repressed consumption comes to an end, continued monetary and fiscal tightening continues, and external demand remain weak.

This negative outlook on the economy is reflected in the Colombian vehicle market, which in September 2023 falls for the 12th consecutive month, reporting 15,611 new sales (-34.7%). YTD figures at 134,500 are down 31.2% from the previous year.

Looking at cumulative data up to September 2023 brand-wise, Renault ranks in 1st with 20,402 sales (-44.6%) and Toyota rises 1 spot into 2nd with 18,420 (-2.9%).

Chevrolet ranks in 3rd with 17,422 sales (-44.2%), followed by Mazda at 13,049 (+9.4%), Kia at 10,890 (-24.9%), Suzuki at 7,498 (-51.0%) and Nissan with 6,398 sales (-26.3%).

The Volkswagen falls 1 spot into 8th with 4,767 (-59.1%), followed by Ford in 9th at 4,355 (+3.5%) and Foton with 3,820 sales (-13.2%).

The Renault Duster is the best selling model despite losing 31.7% from the previous year, followed closely by the Toyota Corolla Cross up 13.7% and 10 spots.

Medium-Term Market Trend

In the last decade the Colombian light vehicle market has had many ups and downs. Starting in 2010 at 230,770 sales the market grew 39.5% in 2011 reaching the current all-time high at 321,887. The brief uptrend reversed in the following year falling 5.3% in 2012 and 6.5% in 2013 ending the year at 284,879 registrations. In 2014 the market grew 11.1% back up to 316,482 sales, to drop back down in the following year. From 2015 to 2018 the light vehicle market remained in a downtrend reaching a low of 257,173 by the end of 2018.

Before the pandemic the Light vehicle market in Colombia grew a slight 2.3% in 2019, but by march 2020 the market began to collapse reaching by the end of the year a variation of -30%, with sales at 184,057.

2021 was a great year of recovery for the Colombian market that grew 36.1% to 271,835 sales. The projections for 2022 show that the year will end on a positive note, continuing the uptrend started in the previous year. Despite the good news, there are a few issues in the automotive industry that are going to affect the Colombian market in the future: the disruption in the global supply chain caused by a lack of raw materials, in particular for the production of microchips and Governments push towards Evs, an expensive alternative for low income consumers. At the moment affects from this last point are very mild, due to the low adoption of BEVs in South American countries (0.45% of total market share in South America).

Medium-Term Market Trend

The Uruguayan vehicles market has had many ups and downs in the past decade. From 2010 to 2013 sales grew from 39,961 to the current all time high of 56,113 sales. The arrival of the pandemic caused the demand for light vehicles to drop even further, reaching the lowest levels of the decade at 34,540 (-20.3%).

Luckily in 2021 the market bounced back right away, reporting at +42.6% variation that took sales up to 49,267. In 2022 sales maintained the momentum, growing 7.2% to 52,829. This being said lately the global automotive industry has been confronting some issues that might lower vehicle demand in the future: the disruption in the global supply chain caused by a lack of raw materials, in particular for the production of microchips and Governments push towards Evs, an expensive alternative for low income consumers. At the moment affects from this last point are very mild, due to the low adoption of BEVs in South American countries (0.45% of total market share in South America).
