Ukrainian auto market in 2020 falls by 3.2% despite the pandemic and lockdowns affecting sales significantly in Q2. Full-Year sales have been 85.450, while Peugeot impresses by jumping 2 spots and gaining 28.4%.

Market Trend

The Ukrainian car market fell very slightly in 2020 despite the global pandemic has impacted sales significantly in Q2. 

The market has been hit both by economic and political crisis falling down at near one-tenth of the record level (over 600.000 sales) achieved over a decade ago. The negative peak was hit in 2016, with only 65.516 units sold. Then, the market registered a sign of recovery in 2017 with 82.729 units. However, sales went down 2.4% again in 2018 at 80.742.

In 2019, the market immediately recovered from the previous year’s drop, ending with rotal sales at 88.253 (+9.3%).

After starting the year extremely positively (+33.9% in January and +20.4% in February), the market quickly started collapsing in March as the virus struck. The sharpest drop in sales this year was in April when sales declined by 46.6%. 

The market recovered almost immediately, in fact, it was growing again in June by 13.1%. In the second half of the year, the country experienced a mixed trend, with 3 positive months and 3 negative months, ending the year in December on a positive note (+8.5%).

Indeed, Full-Year sales for 2020 have been 85.450, reporting a decline of 3.2% compared to 2019.

Brand-wise, this year the leader Renault (-1.7%) gained 0.3% market share, followed by the growing Toyota (+5.9%), which gained an impressive 1.4% share. Kia on the other hand lost 1.5% share, falling 19.7%.  Skoda remained in 4th place and fell 18.8%, followed by Hyundai -up 1 spot- which lost 20.9%.

Nissan -down 1 spot- registered the worst performance in the leaderboard by falling 28.1%, followed by Volkswagen (-21.1%) and Peugeot which jumped 2 spot and registered the best performance by gaining 28.4% sales. Closing the leaderboard we have Suzuki -down 1 spot- gaining 13.5% this year and Mazda falling in last place, gaining 14.5%.

The most sold vehicle this year has been the Toyota Rav4 (+34.6%) with 5.690 units sold and jumped 3 spots, overtaking the Renault Duster, which gained 6.4% registering 5.534 new sales this year. The Kia Sportage (-16.3%) closes the podium by falling 2 spots and reports 5.043 new units sold.
