Medium-Term Market Trend

The vehicles market in Thailand has had many ups and downs in the past years. The market moved from 756,446 sales in 2010 to 1.44 million in 2012. While the trend inverted in the following year, initiating a downtrend that would continue until 2016 where it reached a low of 769,623 sales. 2017 and 2018 were years of recovery were the market grew back up to 1.04 million.

Following an 8.8% drop in 2019, the arrival of the pandemic caused the market to collapse further, reaching the lowest levels of the decade at 737,244 sales.

Thailand’s vehicles market remained relatively static in 2021 falling only 0.3%. While finally in 2022 showed signs of recovery, with volume rising 10.8% to 628,423.

The momentum gained in 2022 continues into 2023, with the first months posting positive performances. Despite the strong start to the year, the vehicles market will have to confront some issues within automotive industry: mainly the disruption in the global supply chain caused by a lack of raw materials, in particular for the production of microchips.

Market Trend and Outlook

The Vietnamese Vehicle Market in October 2023 falls for the 4th month after growing 7.6% in June, reporting 32,424 sales (-13.6%). YTD figures at 268,759 are down 24.1% from the prior year.

Looking at specific models the Mitsubishi Xpander becomes the best seller despite falling 12.0% in sales, followed by the Hyundai Accent down 26.6%.

Medium-Term Market Trend

In Vietnam the primary vehicle for individual mobility in the motorcycles and not the car. Over 3 million 2-Wheelers are sold each year, while 4-wheeler sales never achieved the half million.

In the last decade, the car and light commercial market boomed, from less than 100K in 2010 to nearly 400K ten years after. The momentum slowed down in 2021 due to the covid driven measures, with volume falling 0.4%. Although the market did slow down, it was not  hit as roughly as other ASEAN countries.

The birth of a local manufacturer – VinFast – fully dedicated to the electric vehicles (both 4 and 2 wheelers) is a stimulus for the traditional manufacturers controlling the market (Japanese and Koreans) and the incentives for EVs from the government will help to boost the electrification process, which is seen faster in Vietnam than in the rest of the region.

The outlook is positive for the next years, driven by expected growth in the pro capita income and by the modernization of road infrastructures. The market is, in fact, already showing positive signs of growth, with sales surging 21.5% to 465,741 in 2022.

YTD figures at 835,123 are down 1.9% from the prior year. Mitsubishi falls 21.1% into 5th spot.

Indonesian Vehicles Sales in October 2023 falls for the 4th month in a row after growing 4.3% in June, with new registrations at 80,270 (-13.9%). YTD figures at 835,123 are down 1.9% from the prior year. Mitsubishi falls 21.1% into 5th spot.

Market Trend and Outlook

Indonesia’s economy was expected to grow by 5.0% in 2023 as domestic demand took over from commodity exports as the driver of growth. This being said the economy undershot market expectations and grew at the slowest pace in two years in Q3 on cooling domestic demand: Public spending swung into contraction and private consumption growth cooled, outweighing a stronger expansion in fixed investment.

Looking at the Indonesian Vehicle Market we can observe this loss in momentum, with sales in October 2023 falling for the 4th consecutive month after growing 4.3% in June, with new registrations at 80,370 (-13.9%). YTD figures at 835,123 are down 1.9% from the prior year.

Looking at cumulative data up to October 2023 brand-wise, the leader is still Toyota with 273,820 sales (-1.1%), followed by Daihatsu with 161,650 (+2.4%), Honda with 119,917 sales (+12.1%) and Suzuki with 66,530 sales (-7.9%).

Mitsubishi falls 1 spot into 5th with 64,082 sales (-21.1%), followed by Hyundai -up  2 spots- at 29,537 units sold (+6.0%).

Isuzu maintains 7th with 26,651 sales (-13.0%), in front of Mitsubishi Fuso at 26,453 (-12.1%), Hino in 9th at 23,040 registrations (-5.6%) and Wuling closing the Top 10 with 16,652 sales (-22.7%).

Looking at specific models the Honda Brio becomes the new best seller, rising 1 spot with a 9.8% year-on-year increase in sales, followed by the Daihatsu Sigra up 37.2%.

Medium-Term Market Trend

The market had spent four years in the sky, when, during 2010-2013 the market scored four all-time records in a row, almost doubling volume and not only outpacing the magic 1 million units quota but landing at a 2013 record of 1.22 million vehicles sales, before interrupting the run in 2015 with registrations at 1,031,808 (-14.5%).

Then a new positive pathway was taken ending 2016 at 1,074,000 units (including HCVs and Bus) and keeping a moderate recovery in 2017 as well. In 2018, the market was substantially flat, ending with 1,140,349 units sold. In 2019, the market registered a negative trend, with full-year sales at 1,079,474 (-5.3%).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic sales fell in 2020. In fact, 582,298 units were sold, reporting a decline of 46.1% compared to 2019.

In 2021 the year started negatively for the Indonesian market, in fact, in Q1 178,451 units have been sold, reporting a 24.5% decrease in sales compared to Q1 2020, while in Q2 sales started growing extremely quickly, reporting a 771% increase in sales with 209,439 units due to the very low volumes in Q2 2020.

In Q3 sales kept rising quickly, gaining 100.6% sales with 212,498 units, and in Q4 sales gained 21.8% with 262,984.

Indeed, Full-Year sales for 2021 were 863,372, reporting a 48.3% increase compared to 2020.

Sales in 2022 totaled 977,527, a 21.1% increase from the prior year.

Medium-Term Market Trend

The car market in Singapore has had a few ups and downs in the last decade. From 2010 to 2014 demand for car passengers fluctuated between 41k and 20k. Following a 28.8% growth in 2014, the market broke the 40k resistance in 2015 closing the year at 66,740 cumulative sales. Demand for car passengers continued to grow until reaching the current all-time high at 91,980 in 2017. In 2018 the market rebounded, falling two years in a row and reaching 72,408 sales by the end of 2019.

The arrival of the pandemic in 2020 caused many manufacturers and distributers to shut down. This brought the car market to a halt and sales fell 38.6% down to 44,463.

Singapore’s car market slightly recovered in 2021 reaching 45,442 sales. While in 2022 sales fell 31.9% to 30,934. A combination of factors are behind the current industry struggle: the disruption in the global supply chain caused by a lack of raw materials, in particular for the production of microchips and Governments push towards Evs, an expensive alternative for low income consumers.

Market Trend and Outlook

The Philippine economy in 2022 reported one of the highest growth rates among global emerging economies. While GDP growth is set to moderate to 6 percent in 2023 caused by a challenging external environment: with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) hiking policy rates to 6.25% in hope of anchoring inflation expectations.

Despite 2023 forecasted to have a lower growth that 2022, Philippine’s vehicle market is still performing strongly with sales in September 2023 rising for the 19th consecutive month, reporting 38,168 new registrations (+12.5%). YTD figures reach 310,639 a 22.0% increase from the previous year.

In the competitive arena, cumulative figures from the first 3 quarters of 2023 report that the leader Toyota is up a huge 15.7%, followed by Mitsubishi (+64.7%), Ford (+38.7%), Nissan (+17.9%), Suzuki (-7.1%) and Honda (+20.3%).

Looking at the best selling models the Toyota Vios is on top with a 16.8% year-on-year increase in sales, followed by the Toyota Hilux up 1.2%.

Medium-Term Market Trend

The Philippines market have been one of the fastest growing in the decade before the covid arrive, with sales jumped from just over 150k in the 2010 to over 400K in 2019, with a peak hit in the 2017, when the all-time record was established at 487.000.

In the 2020 the pandemic arrival caused prolonged shutdown in plants and dealership and the market really collapsed losing 40.8% versus the previous year, hitting the worse level out if the previous seven years.

However, the fall was not caused by structural reasons and the recovery was immediate with 2021 sales recovering the 300k level.

The uptrend continued into 2022, with the market rising another 7.2% to 398,848 cumulative sales.

Future perspectives are positive, considering the market potential is not far from the 1 million annual sales and we foresee this market as one of the best performing between now and the 2030.
